Plans are coming together for Alberta. I had a skype meeting with my advisor tonight, so I now have a final schedule for the upcoming year:
Fall 2011
EAST 598 Topics in East Asian Research: The default overview class for all the graduate students. There are 11 total in my cohort, a record for Alberta.
JPN 341 Classical Japanese I: I had a bit of basic classical at IUC, but obviously the earthquake screwed that up. Need to get my classical up for thesis research next year.
JPN 502 Methods of Research: This will be a class with my advisor, me, and one other student, doing readings in Pre-modern Japanese studies. All over the place reading fun time, with discussion once a week.
TA- EAST 101: Muhahahaha, I will have power, sort of.
Spring 2012
JPN 500 Topics in Japanese Language: This is going to be a kanbun course (special form of reading for anything pre-Meiji period.) I did a bit of this at IUC, but only with modern sources. Good training for reading the diaries next year.
JPN 421 Topics in Japanese Literary History: All pre-modern stuff! Expecting Heike, Genji, etc. Should be fun!
HIST 383 Civilization and Culture of Early China: I have to show that I'm well rounded, especially for the job market in the future, so I need a bit of training in Chinese studies as well. This should partner nicely with my pre-modern Japanese stuff.
TA: Unknown as of yet. Probably working with one of the First-Year Japanese sections, at least assisting and grading papers. My advisor will keep me busy in some way or another.
Additionally, I was having trouble with ResLife arranging my move-in. My lease starts Sept. 1st, but I was trying to move in August 26th so I'd have more time and my mom could come for a few days. ResLife finally got back to me after weeks of radio silence, and said that they could pull something together if my department needed me that early. I talked to my advisor, and he was like "Do you want to come even earlier and go to the conference we're having?" So now tentatively I will be leaving the US August 10th, and attending the
Taira Conference in Banff, Alberta from August 13th to 15th. I hope it works out so I can go!
