So I decided to get a kitten. Some of you already know, and some don't but there it is. Tom is getting Willow in the divorce agreement and though I wasn't planning on getting a kitten this soon, the opportunity almost literally fell on my lap. Thanks to
maraschino_fae , I am the proud owner of a 12 week old calico kitten.
maraschino_fae 's friends in Greensboro were giving kittens away complete with shots and boosters for free. I can't argue with that.
maraschino_fae called me up to let me know about the kitten and I took a trip with several people to go visit the kitten at a wonderful store called Terra Blue in Greensboro. The kittens personality was wonderful and I fell in love almost right away. She has a very sweet almost ferret like temperament and she's a lot like Jeff's cat Bastet. I got to take her home with me this Saturday and already Bastet and the kitten are playing!
We had gotten her on Saturday but it wasn't until today that she actually got her name. I was insistent on wanting the kitten to name herself. The previous name her caretakers called her was Cali, for calico. Somehow it just didn't seem fitting for her. However, early this morning she did something I have never seen a cat do. She was lying on the bed with me when she heard a sudden noise nearby. She then shot straight up onto her hind legs and froze there just like a meerkat! I knew then that she had to be named something remenicent of a meerkat. I didn't want to name her meerkat simply because I think it's silly to name animals after another animal. So, I looked up online for some variations of the name, the Latin terms, other languages ect. Of course there was the possibility of Timon from 'The Lion King' but, that's a boys name and very much overused and stereotypical. I went to work to ponder ideas for names and it wasn't until I came home when Jeff opened the door and brightly told me the kitten had chosen her name. "Meerka!" he exclaimed. Of course! Meerka! Perfect! Why didn't I think of that?! Such a simple derivative of meerkat yet it works!
