Humanity & Stereotypes

Just random thoughts running through my head, LOL! I remembered an event from the past in my head that happened back in 2004, my first year of community college and wanted to jot that down before the memory disappears into the mists of years ago again! My naive self (not saying that I don't still have my moments ;D) was in my dorm room doing class work while a friend whom was my childhood playmate and graduated together from high school with  rested during lunch period. She was watching a news broadcast on television that had something to do with the upcoming elections and I was only catching whispers of words every so often. Just happened to look up as former President Bill Clinton was shown walking through a crowd as the announcer mentioned that he was fighting cancer. "Ahhh... Poor guy," I replied aloud. Turning around to look at me, this is what my friend had to say to my comment!

"Oh! Are you a Democrat?" The rest becomes blurry after that as to what happened next, but I do recall my thoughts quite clearly. I was out and out shocked! What has happened to society that there is no sympathy or compassion towards one's fellow human being? Is he not like any other ill person just diagnosed with a very possible life threatening cancer? Will he not also have the same struggles, both emotional and physical, as he battles to survive? Why should a person's beliefs and values matter in such a situation?
