Vegetarian Deconstruction

Okay. So I'm standing by the refrigerator in my vegetarian co-op and I open the door to see what I can eat and I see, what do I see, but some sausages. Apparently, I discover, we have tons of sausages. And chicken. Vast quantities of meat have stuffed the co-op to the gills -- all of it left over from a local art ( Read more... )

I had a vegetarian ex-boyfriend who believed that it was okay for him to eat leftover meat or meat that he hadn't caused to be there.

So: if we went to a restaurant, he wouldn't order meat, but it was okay for him to try a bite of mine.

One time we went to my parents house. We were supposed to eat Chinese food with them for dinner, but we were behind schedule so they ate without us and put the leftovers in the fridge. If we had showed up an hour earlier when they were eating, my ex-boyfriend would not have been able to eat the meat, but since it was already in the fridge (despite the fact that there are always purposely left overs when my Mom gets Chinese food so that she can have it for lunch the next day and so the meat was in no danger of going to waste) he thought it was okay for him to eat it. I think this may have been due in part to left overs often being thrown out at his parents' house, but it's very rare that they won't be eaten at my parents' house.

He was a very annoying vegetarian, actually. He was never satisfied in restaurants, even if they had six or seven vegetarian items on their menu, when a normal person can be satisfied with that many choices anyway or would complain that they were all variations of the same thing (eg, half of these are pasta dishes, when in fact, half of the general menu was too).

I think he just didn't like being a vegetarian, but felt he needed to for reasons similar to yours and so had a complex system of justifying when it was okay to eat it. Since your reasons against meat are against our farming practice, is it okay for you to eat animals not part of that practice. For example, if a friend killed a deer in the forest, could you eat that? If so, could you eat meat farmed in a way that seemed more humane to you?

I eat meat. I think that it's more healthy and natural for us and that our survival is most important. That's a lie. I just like meat.
