March 20:

Decided to sign up for a trial of Crashplan online backup service. Don't plan to use it as my primary reliable back-up, but think I might add it as a level of back-up.

Think I might eventually get a 4U server case to load a bunch of hard drives into a place to dump my raw footage to. Don't know how I would back that up though if it will end up being a lot of data.

Livejournal seems to have changed how it does things. It is very difficult now for me to find my hidden entries to edit them. Seems to take around 6 steps now.

I really need to come up with a new naming convention for incoming photo and movie files that I take.

I've been trying to plan out how I want my data back-up plan to look like by the end of the year. This is what I have thought of so far:
Main computer -> Drives in my computer -> 1 Operating system drive, 2 drive Raid 1 for Personal data, 2 drive Raid 1 for data of current projects working on, 1 drive for Photoshop scratch, OS cache, and directory to render video to, may be put in a 2-drive raid 0 for speed later.

|
| --- > Two backup servers running Freenas. For really critical data, personal mass storage, and data for projects currently working on, raw camera footage to a certain point. One server to be near me, the other one to be at my parents. I have designed the one at my parents to have easily replaceable drives. So if there is a drive failure, I would just have to send them a replacement and they could pop one in.

Considering maybe getting a NAS device one day that has an advanced Raid function. Netgear's Readynas has 'Xraid' and Synology's systems have 'hybridRaid'.

Notes for myself for later: (how to update Freenas 8)
Upgrading from the Web GUI

The easiest method for upgrading to the newest FreeNAS release is to use the web interface.

If you are upgrading from version 8.X or earlier you will need to perform an upgrade using the CD method below.

Download the GUI_Upgrade.xz file for your architecture. You will also need to download the release notes to match the file you downloaded. The release notes contain the hash which is used to verify the download. Shut down all of the services (system menu \ services tab). Click on System, then settings, then Firmware Update. Select a volume to use as temp space for the firmware file and click 'Apply Update'. Click on 'Choose File' and select the file you downloaded in step 1. Enter the hash that corresponds to the file you downloaded and click apply update.

After performing the steps the system needs to be rebooted to finish applying the update.

Making chili tonight in a crock pot for the first time... five quarts of it by accident. Where am I going to store all of this!?

That chili turned out to be too greasy for me. :( I don't want to waste it, but I also don't think I can safely eat it.

I've discovered something called SnapRaid that I think would be good for a future bulk Raw data storage server.

Software to consider in the future: Liquesce and Drivebender.

Made cookies. Put cocoa powder into the mix. They taste a bit like brownies now.

Had to wakeup at 3 am to bring a friend to the airport. This led to me getting stressed about waking up on time. Had a sleep paralysis dream that people were breaking into my apartment. When I got back from dropping off my friend I went back to bed. I then had a dream that my sister gained magical powers and were using them to destroy our old house for some reason.

Decided to sign up for the three year plan with Crashplan. My only real issue with the service right now though is that the software can sometimes fail to connect to the main server. It requires a series of rebooting the service to get it working again.
