"There are a couple points here. First, the article repeatedly makes the point that these things are not entirely within your control; any of your FRIENDS who use these services and who have your contact information stored in any way can still accidentally out you to the internet. Second, the point the article makes REPEATEDLY is that these services are worse than malware to get rid of if you ever used them at any time, or even if you didn't (see above comment about friends.) Third, social networking on the internet is becoming an increasingly large and powerful social force. It's becoming increasingly impractical (and may soon be impossible) to completely opt out of it any more than you can simply "choose not to use" a telephone. Sure, you can 'opt out' of having a phone and never be bothered by telemarketers, but it will place you on the technosocial level of the Amish to do so. Besides which, more and more workplaces are basically requiring you to network with them in some way in order to even WORK THERE. It probably won't be more than a few years before potential employers require you to give your Facebook and Twitter contact information the same way they require your address and phone number now."

Also, LJ, cut out that 'sim hospital' and 'farm frenzy' ad bullshit. Seriously, stop trying to suck facebook's tit.
