“It’s time to come back,” Rick held out the gun for Shane, shivering at the stroke of the other man’s finger against his skin. Maybe that was the straw that broke the camel’s back - maybe it was the unhappy curl to Shane’s shoulders, that whipped dog look shadowing his eyes. Rick wasn’t sure and at that point - past the thrown punches, past the thrown wrenches, seeing Shane trapped, isolated, so alone in that bus, hand pressed against the window - all Rick knew was that he had to act.
Shane jumped as Rick pushed them against the car, body tensing, hands trapped between their bodies. Rick framed Shane’s face, forcing the other man to look him in the eye. “Come home,” his voice sounded rough, like he’d been screaming for hours - for days. Maybe he had. “Come back to us.”
“Rick. What…”
“Come. Back,” he punctuated the words with a shake. He could feel Shane’s heartbeat thundering against his thumbs.
“Man, I don’t - let go, Rick.” But Shane wouldn’t look at him, those dark eyes so shadowed and hurt and Jesus Christ how did Rick miss this? How did he miss Shane, suffering all alone, right in front of him?
Rick slid his hands around Shane, pushing them flush, head to toe, the sticky summer heat building between them. “Come back,” he murmured, no louder than the rustle of the wind in the trees.
Shane felt rigid in his arms, tension thrumming through him. Rick pressed a hand against the back of Shane’s head, brushing his fingers against the short buzz of hair. “I…” All the acid-laced words from the day rose up to choke him. Rick breathed out a shuddery breath. “Come back to me.” It took all he had to get those words out, barely more than a whisper, a secret, trapped between them.
Slowly…slowly…Shane began to relax, arms coming around Rick, griping tight and silent in the dying hours of the day.
