Brother
We met our new brother the other day. He is not much older than us, but he is so much different. His blond hair is short and sticks up in places. Papa Hojo said to call him Strife, but we don’t like that name. It doesn’t suit him at all.
Brother is nice, much nicer than he ever was. Brother was confused when he first met us. Yazoo said he was scared but he’s wrong. Brother is never scared, never. Loz said he looked silly and nothing at all like him. But I think big brother looks just fine and brave and wonderful, better than he ever did.
Brother’s real name is Cloud, like the sky we never get to see. He talks to us about the stars and how he used to count them. We asked him how many there were. He said he didn’t know. He is sad all the time. I don’t want big brother to be sad anymore.
The others are warming up to him. Cloud doesn’t remember what happened before he came home. He said he must have been lost. Papa Hojo says he was and ruffles the blond, blond hair. Big brother always winces when Papa does that. I don’t blame him. Papa Hojo’s hands hurt us all the time. It’s hard not to flinch when he reaches for us.
Brother’s here now. Yazoo and Loz just came back from the labs. He’s on the bed, right in the middle so we all can curl around him. He tells us stories as Loz cries and Yazoo hides under the covers. He pets our hair and tells us he’ll never leave us. That he’s here now and no matter what happened before, he won’t forget us. Cloud’s eyes are bright, bright blue, like the pictures of the sky in the books the doctors give us. Those eyes never lie. Big brother will always be here to protect us.
Forever, we’ll go. Together we’ll play. That’s what Yazoo and Loz always say. Cloud laughs and hugs us and says yes. We’ll all go together. We’ll all play. It’ll be all right. He’ll never leave us. Never, ever with a cross above his heart. Big brother will keep his promise, he says.
Always.
