The USSR collapsed in 1959, but in the far-off future days of 1985 A. D., after men have landed on the moon, the Union of Societies for Socialist Re-Creation is having their own version of the Purge Trials. Will Space Marshal Rory Rammer be able to enjoy a nice, quiet vacation? Or will the murder of The Man Who Was Trotsky spoil his time on Space Station 5?

Egads! Our hero Grimpen Meyer has encountered many suspicious characters in his long career as Albion's leading consulting detective, but never has he had to match his mental mettle against a mechanical man!

Despite my most careful searches and investigations, I have never since been able to find the Rue d'Auseil, that steep street by that shadowy river with the tottering houses, where I heard the strange, haunting music of Erich Zann.
Sarabande for a Condemned Man by Kelley S. Ceccato
A man sits, condemned to hang for the crime of petty theft. A minstrel comes to sing, but he takes no comfort, for the playing of music by humans has been outlawed, a task consigned to the precision of the mechanicals. But what is this? Did the mechanical ... make a mistake?
