We got in line at 5:30 on Friday morning to get our badge. And once reg opened at 8, it took 5 minutes to get the badge and 25 minutes to meander our way through the maze to get to the cashier.

Great for some last names. spynotebook September 6 2010, 20:32:36 UTC
We were picking up three badges on Thursday mid-afternoon. The two for a last name starting with W went very fast, maybe 20 minutes because there were not many W's. But then, for last name M, we had to stand in line for over 2 hours. It seems like there is a better way so that all lines can be giving out badges at all times, instead of sorting by last name.

An idle thought; can the 'con afford label printers for each booth? Preprinting and putting them in the books just. Takes. Too. Long. (Esp if your staffer is chatty and can't find your name, or is running will call and doesn't know what "will call" means (I kid you not).)

If there's a laptop (preferably networked) and a label printer at each pickup booth, just generate the label right then.

Actually, the way ComicCon does it is fantastic, IMO, and much much faster. At least for professional badges, SDCC emails you your confirmation when you sign up, which includes a barcode on it. You print that out and bring it with you, then one single line is routed through multiple people, each with a barcode scanner and a printer. They scan your barcode which automatically prints your badge, check the name on your badge against your ID, and direct you to a big pile of badge holders, and you're done. Very fast, no issues with last names, one single line feeding to the next available registration person. It's great -- and I don't often say SDCC does anything better than D*C ( ... )
