Welp. Nearly didn't get around to writing anything today. Got caught up in, well, heading back to videogame memory lane. Gah, sucks when you can't remember what you were told to do earlier in the game, and then missing the fact you have to talk to someone twice... ah well. Nothing's perfect and all that. The fact I haven't played said game in ages is not of the helpful here, but at least now I think I'm onto fresh ground.

That little trip back in time feels weird, though. A PS2 game, now, feels clunky as all kinds of clunk; I end up laughing about hey, you can see his polygons, or whatever. And yet I can pick up something with sprite art, a SNES game, and it doesn't matter that the graphics are all unsophisticated. I wonder why that is? It's almost a mini-Uncanny Valley. The PS2 polys are so close to modern games in structure that it just looks obviously old, but the sprite art is its own artform, it doesn't have that same - thing to compare it to factor? You can't get more sophisticated with sprites than a, well, sprite. Higher resolution might be a possibility, but it just feels different somehow.

Speaking of spritey games. One thing I've seen that I'd love a go at some time is game hacking, Pokémon or Super Mario World ROMs especially. Yes, I am the naughty rom person. But seriously - SMW. I have the game. I had it when I was six. And I've actually started an SMW project in the past... only thing is I don't know where all the files I was working on actually went to, as it was back when I had my netbook (which has now pretty much passed on to Dad unless it's holiday time and we're taking it for the wi-fies.)

The Pokemon one, though, would be harder. I have a lot of the tools to lay into a Fire Red rom quite handy, but from what I've gathered, you need more scripting ability to fiddle with the pokemans, especially due to such things as having to talk to NPCs. I know how to edit individual critters, their sprites, powers and evolutions, and I've always had a soft spot for fakemon... it's the more complex stuff that might prove a doozy.
Heh, maybe I could do Heartlessmon or something?

Probably a pipe dream, though.

On other news. I recently found out that there's a couple more conventions of a nerdly variety that I could possibly manage to get my butt to; two possible on consecutive weekends, though, so I'd have to pick one or t'other. One of them, though, seems to be near somewhere a friend of mine lives, so perhaps talking her into it might be fun (although that would involve me being able to email her and I couldn't last time I tried. It bounced. And I am loath to get the facebooks as I have often mentioned.) Might take my Rose kit if I do that thing. Seems a shame to only air it the once, huh?
