We had our garage sale this weekend. A LOT of work went into setting it up, I dunno how people do this more than once a year. We had good weather for most of it, and had a LOT of traffic on Saturday - we only brought in 1/3rd of Saturday's income on Sunday. Mostly it was the books and electronics that were moving I think, along with some clothes and not too much of the stuffed animals. We didn't sell the futon but we have email from someone interested in it... will be following up now that I've taken a picture of it. We brought in a few hundred, and only broke a couple things owing to a wind gust knocking a clothing stand over.
You need a thick skin or a wily nature to run a garage sale. You get people coming up to you with $30 books that are priced at $1, asking you "will you take 25c?" Christ people, get over yourselves. Some people don't CARE what you price it at, as long as they can give you less than you asked for, I really do not understand that. If someone said "to me it's only worth $5" I might understand that, but they're all "can I have it for even less?" You must strike a balance between not having prices too high to drive away interest, and not having prices so low that you're insulted by the haggling. I chased one person away over 4 art plates with stands that I'd priced at $4 total. "Will you take $2?" "No. The stands are worth $4 by themselves." "How about $3?" "It sells for $20, and it's priced at FOUR DOLLARS! Is there a problem with that?" Yeah. Some things I'd rather donate to someone who'll appreciate it, than sell to jerks. Other people I happily lowered prices for.. because they were friendly and polite about it. Let that be a lesson for you, friendliness pays off.
So now the fun part is going to be packing it all up for donation, because while we COULD keep it all and do this again, we really don't WANT to. :) A couple of the pricier pieces will be going up on craigslist over the next week or so. Hopefully we'll have the garage back by the 30th for the Housewarming Party.
In other news, we're getting back into working out (which we've slacked off on since the move). We need to work on our coordination and communication though, I ended up spending more time waiting for the others to arrive at the club than I actually spent working out. *rolls eyes* Ah well.
