Day Two: Pirates Sighted on the Horizon

Sep 30, 2013 11:20

This morning was a little more challenging than my first day at the new facility. Today, the logistics of breakfast and caffeine were more difficult. Coffee and scones were provided as our Welcome to Your New Home treat (they were really good), but that was a one-time deal.

The coffee machine dispenses coffee-flavored sand and water in a paper cup, and there are no breakfast items available in the vending machines other than Pop-Tarts. There is a coffee brewing machine that takes special cartridges, so I can use that, but it is in another team's area. We've started making pre-prepared portions of oatmeal for me to take. So far, so good.

However, I cannot leave snacks at the office. Someone has already discovered there is a rodent with a sweet tooth invading our labyrinth of cubicles....

Clumsy Fu

Too much adrenaline before bedtime. My sweetie was attempting to do too much too late at night, I think. While preparing the oatmeal, she started cleaning something and the oatmeal boiled over. Cries of distress brought me from my last-minute editing of the newsletter to the kitchen to help.

A little later, I heard a glass smash on the floor. Ælfgifu had made an attempt to leap from counter top to 'fridge (or vice versa), and knocked a glass of water off the counter. I spent the next several minutes with a damp rag followed by the vacuum cleaner trying to ensure tiny shards of glass didn't find their way into sensitive kitty paws. My sweetie dumped out their food and water and cleaned everything thoroughly--just in case. Ælf' retreated to the top of her tower to sulk. She knew she couldn't blame THIS on Ignatius.

I finally told my wife to GO TO BED when she tried to hang up the curtains she had washed. She had hung them over the shower curtain rod to let them drip dry, and the rod decided to go on strike. I heard a weak heelllllpppp! from upstairs.

Next Phase Complete

We finished off the last part of our new natural area. Paper and pine straw now cover a long and winding strip of the lawn. I had plenty of pine straw left over, so I tried to tame an overgrown area near the deck. It looks better, but I'm not convinced it will stay that way. The remaining pine straw is still in the truck, but I think the area near the A/C units needs more, so I know where it should go.

Hit and Miss

The new car detection system Howard wants at the museum is an uphill battle. My first attempt to install the micro-resisters on car axles worked pretty well, but the next three were not uniformly successful. It may be that some of the resistors are bad. It could also be that I have no idea what thickness of conductive paint is required to do the job....

work, yard, ealdercote, model railroad, cats
