AElfgifu is having the rest of her teeth removed today. It is a rotten way for
ealdthryth to have to spend her day off (and of course, even worse for poor AElf'). We had to take away all the food at 6pm last night, and the water this morning. All the cats were disturbed by this and have been informing us at length that they are starving. They did OK last night, though, and it isn't like they are scrawny little strays--all but AElf' could stand to lose about a pound.
One of my co-workers had to take her cat to the emergency clinic this weekend. It apparently snuck out of the house and got into some anti-freeze that had just started leaking from their car that day. After some expensive treatments, it sounds like they got the cat to the vet in time and everything will be OK.
So, all that to say that a couple of cats need a little extra healing energy today.
Produce Better Produce
We were out of pink hairless monkey food, so I had to stop at the store on the way home. My weekly purchases normally include one of
ealdthryth's breakfast staples: fresh blueberries. They haven't had any in a couple of weeks. Last week, I brought home an acceptable substitute: strawberries. This week, there were still no blueberries, and to my horror, a lot of the strawberries were not red, but white and fuzzy. Yes, I informed the produce manager. The apples we are getting locally are full of bruises, and finding some that look OK is getting more and more difficult.
Once upon a time, I despaired of ever finding decent produce in a South Carolina grocery store--one of the little ironies of living in a primarily agricultural state is not being able to find good produce. If I want to resort to dhrama, I might say that this store has reverted to type. However, my perception may simply be skewed.
I know this store tries very hard to have "organic" and non-GMO foods that are grown regionally or locally to us. I suspect the real reason I can't find what I want is because things are simply out of season.
I Can See
For the first time in months, I can actually see the ridgeline of the mountains! OK, so there are a lot of low clouds that are re-establishing the moniker "Smoky Mountains", and they are actually below the ridge, but I can see the ridge. Yay! I'm guessing that the slow-moving cold front that passed through knocked a lot of the yuck out of the air with the rain that accompanied the front. I can also see a nice gradient of blue in the sky, unlike the cartoon Tazmania yellow haze that has been typical of the summer. I don't know why this seems so important to me, but it is.
