My headcannon for the Alienage is that a lot of the younger elves get involved in "shady dealings", but that as they get older many will stop out of fear of bringing the guards down on their families. It's one thing to get caught and bear the punishment yourself. It's another thing entirely to get caught and have them raid your house and harm your spouse and kids. Plus there's that whole "It won't happen to me" thing that younger generations have to work through. (No offense, younger generations ;D )
The first book in the Riftwar saga is "Magician", which was split in the early 90's and expanded into "Magician: Apprentice" and "Magician: Master". I love them so much my paperbacks are starting to fall apart and I'd rebuy them in hardcover if one were available. Sadly, they are not. I'm not sure if Jimmy the Hand is introduced in Apprentice or Master (cause they blend into one book in my brain!), but he's a loveable scamp, and once he's given someone his loyalty, he's theirs for life!
Fair warning - there are upwards of 30 books written in this universe, but the first two are a complete story on thier own.

So, um, yeah, I highly recommend them!
