So, it turns out reports of Maric's death were greatly exaggerated. He returns to Ferelden where Anora is ruling after the Blight. She likes being queen, he's not particularly interested in being king again, but his return is stirring up unrest with both the nobles and the commoners. A political marriage to his BFF's daughter is the most practical solution and isn't awkward at all. Except how it totally is.

The first time it happened was just after her eighteenth birthday. Her father had left to check out a disturbance in the south, and Maric had been kind enough to invite Anora to stay with him at the palace, rather than at her father's estate in Denerim. She was almost family, after all, and he hated the thought of her staying all alone in that dreary place when she could be so much closer to him and to Cailan

Her father was dead, Cailan was dead...all the men she had loved and protected her were gone. But Anora still had one thing that mattered to her - the health of her kingdom
