Adorable

“What would you like?” the bartender asked Seishirou, as he slid in a random seat. She was fairly attractive, with long hair cut off at the elbows and eyes that were a mixture of grey and blue.

Seishirou shrugged casually. “A glass of water, if you please.”

She snorted. “Not much of a drinker, are you?”

“No,” he said simply. “Not really.”

The bartender got a glass cup for him, and filled it with tap water. “You want ice with that?” she asked, not bothering to turn around.

“Yes please,” Seishirou replied, taking a look around the small bar. There were a few people sitting at various tables, talking among themselves, their voices drowning over each other’s until it just sounded quite like a swarm of bees. “Do you get many customers here?” he asked lightly, trying to make conversation. He didn’t really know why, but he felt like chatting right about now. Funny, he usually doesn't like talking, and prefers silence as his company.

“Not many,” she answered, setting his glass of water down on the counter hard enough that the ice cubes made a merry clinking sound. “We’re not really well known around here. You get the regulars and occasionally a few new guys in here, and that’s about it.”

“Oh really?”

“Yeah. You see those two guys over there?” She commented, pointing at two people by the corner, murmuring to each other, while chugging down their beer. “Come here every Wednesday and Friday. Those three over there are siblings, I gather. Once a month is their schedule.”

“And that one over there?” Seishirou examined the sullen man sitting a few tables away from him carefully. “He doesn’t look too cheerful,” he said dryly.

“He’s not,” she said bluntly. “Never seen him smile before. Comes here six o’clock sharp, every evening. You’d think he has a place to be, rather than hang out here.”

“Hmm,” he took a sip of his water, and set it down on the counter once again. About half of the ice cubes have melted by now. “Anybody else?”

She frowned for a moment, and snapped her fingers. “Oh right, there’s this new guy. Started coming a few months ago. He doesn’t have a set schedule. Once a week, maybe two? I think he came two days ago.”

“Oh. What’s he like?

“He’s real cute, if you know what I mean," she said, picking up a mug, and drying it with a ragged cloth. “He’s got these stunning green eyes.”

“He sounds interesting,” Seishirou commented, his interest piqued. Maybe she was talking about Subaru-kun?

“Oh, yeah, he is,” she agreed, setting down the dry mug and picking up another one. “His eyes have these sad look to them though. Must’ve been through a lot, the poor kid. His hair looks soft..." she sighed wistfully. "Like silk. He always wears a white trench coat. Don't know why. He never asks for a beer or a shot of tequila either, nothing. Only water,” she laughed. “Sounds like you.”

Seishirou chuckled lightly. “Yes, it does.” Definitely Subaru-kun.

She wasn’t even looking at him anymore, she seemed to be speaking from her memory. “He’s a bit cold though. No, no, not cold. He’s…” She paused for a moment to try and find a correct description. “Distant. That’s the word. He’d just… sits there, looking at his glass of water, watching the ice melt until closing. And even then, I have to snap him out of his trance.”

“Sounds like someone I know.”

“Does it? He’s awfully polite, never forgets his ‘thank you’s and ‘please’s,” she added thoughtfully. “I pity him, what ever happened to him. He doesn’t look like someone who would want pity, but I pity him anyways.”

“Most people don’t want pity,” Seishirou reflected. It was growing dark outside, and most of his ice had melted by now. “It makes them seem weak.” A blast of icy wind came in through the door as two of the costumers exited the bar.

“Well? You’ve been listening to me ramble on for such a long time, what your opinion on the guy?” she inquired, sorting through the cash register.

A smirk came across Seishirou’s face. “Oh, he sounds positively adorable.”
