CHARACTER NAME: Flynn Scifo
FANDOM: Tales of Vesperia
CANON: Post-canon
WHAT THEY LOST: His ability to use a sword. For a solider like Flynn losing his talent with his favored weapon would be a big set back. He wouldn’t be able to protect others or do his duty. But even beyond that his sword is a symbolic thing for him- he and Yuri saved to buy a sword together, and promised to make things better on it. While he can learn to use other weapons to defend himself, he will never be able to reach the skill he could have with a sword due to lacking the natural talent he has with a blade. Plus: if he ever somehow gets a hold of a working blastia most of his artes would be useless or have to be relearned from scratch due to them being sword based.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER: A lot of who Flynn has grown into is due to his history. Flynn was orphaned at a very young age, and grew up in the low income area of the capital city of the Empire, Zaphias, known as the Lower Quarter. Along with another orphan named Yuri Lowell, he was raised by the neighborhood, poor but generally happy. He and Yuri grew up basically as siblings, doing everything together and dreaming of bigger things: they saw how the people of the Lower Quarter were stepped on by the nobility and swore to help change things no matter what. “To make people smile”.

So they joined the Knights together. But things didn’t go as planned. Seeing the corruption rampant in the Empire so close up was a shocking experience, and in the end was too much for Yuri. He left the organization bitter and disillusioned… while Flynn stayed, determined to tough it out and fix things from the inside out. This was the first time the two didn’t see eye to eye on something serious, and their relationship was forever strained by it. Flynn is a big picture guy, and above all else an idealist. He knows in his heart that people are good, and that things can always change for the better-- but only if you’re willing to work hard and make those changes. He can be kind of naive this way, but he’s not completely blind to humankind’s darker side… he just refuses to be deterred by it.

In fact that’s a lot about Flynn right there-- he’s damn stubborn about his beliefs and everything in general. You could almost call him ridged in fact. A few years after Yuri left the Knights, Flynn took a pilgrimage, traveling the world and training. It was during this time that he met Yuri again, and as soon as he saves him from attackers… he starts attacking him too. Not out of any hate, but because Yuri was now a wanted criminal and he wanted to spook him and get some answers. He can be blunt and even a little scary when his trust has been tested or his stubborn mule nature fought against. Even after all that time he still wanted Yuri to return to the Knights, to come back to their shared dream. His intent was of course noble, but he can be a royal ass to those around him ‘for their own good’. His rare yet powerful temper tends to flair in such situations. Still, once and awhile a bit more of his Lower Quarter upbringing comes up sometimes- When fighting Yuri especially he can banter back just as well as his friend, teasing and mocking while fighting like he’s having the time of his life, although he get’s flustered easily by some of Yuri’s taunting. He’s not QUITE up to the other man’s level when it comes to attitude.

But even though he can be very structured, Flynn is also a huge softy. He cares deeply for not only his friends, but for people in general. He’s given all his time to helping the people of the Empire, and while he’s quickly moved up in the ranks of the Knights he doesn’t really show any ego over it. In his room in the castle one can see a framed childhood picture of him and Yuri right next to official commendations and awards: given just as much importance. Still, he understands the bigger picture-- while it hurts him to see people suffering, he knows that fixing the symptoms only prolongs the sickness. You have to cure the core. So while Yuri travels the world dealing with things, Flynn follows behind, cleaning up the aftermath his friend leaves in his wake. Flynn is a diplomat and politician at heart, willing to play nice with those causing people pain if it means stopping them for good later. He doesn’t like it, and part of him wishes he could live like Yuri… but he has a duty and does it with no complaint.

Unfortunately this means that sometimes it’s harder for Flynn to see what directly in front of him. It took having it shoved in his face that Alexei might be corrupted, and even though Ragou murdered many people, Flynn is still not only forced to stand aside but insists on doing nothing until they can find a completely legal way to catch him in the act (though it should be noted that Flynn was willing to have Yuri break in to Ragou’s home so his knights could follow after to ‘quell the disturbance’ and find Ragou’s house of horrors ‘on accident’. Bend the rules if needed, but never break them). He’s willing to arrest his best friend for his crimes even though he has saved lives through his actions, so while Yuri is probably the most important person in his life even he isn’t above the law in Flynn’s eyes.

Still, under his Knightly persona, Flynn is a sweet natured and slightly dorky guy. He likes to cook (though he’s legendarily awful at it) and gets ridiculously shy around anything sexual (especially women) yet tends to completely miss it if someone shows interest in him. He’s super tidy, and loves things organized… even getting onto Yuri for not doing his artes ‘as they were intended’. Flynn is looked up to as a leader and ideal by many in the Lower Quarter, yet in his own eyes he’s just another man doing what he can to help change the world. In his heart he is still that dirty Lower Quarter kid just trying to give back a little.

ABILITIES: Dude to his Perm. Loss and the fact that blastia cores have been transformed back into aer in his world, Flynn no longer had even half of his former combat abilities. Even so, he’s a trained Knight, so he has extensive combat training and is in wonderful shape. But he’s 100% human regardless.

If for some reason he ever get a hold of a working blastia (basically a magic item from his world) he would have access to all his artes again. His artes are a mix of healing and attack spells along with energy based sword attacks. Even if he regained a blastia though, due to his perm. Loss he can’t use most of his strike attacks anymore without some serious retraining, if at all. All his artes can be seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uE4u8uMKzcc

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: Saying things had calmed down after Duke’s defeat would be stretching it a bit. All blastia were out of commission, and no blastia meant no barriers protecting the cites and towns, and even with the Knights and Guilds working together now that meant all the more danger from monsters.

But that was only the most obvious problem. No one really thought much about how dependent humans were on the crystallized aer gems until they were gone. Flynn was feeling the affects of one such simple loss that night, and wrapped the thick woolen blanket around his shoulders as he stared at his paper work and pondered adding more wood to the fireplace in his large castle bedroom. It was cold outside, slushy not-quite snow falling, and the blastia standing in the far corner of the room that at one time supplemented the fireplaces’ heat had been dead for almost two months now. Add in a few slightly burnt fingertips from him having to relight the oil lamp on his desk half a dozen times that night alone (his tiny blastia lamp had been given to Rita as a gift/peace offering a bit back) and general exhaustion, and Flynn was seriously considering abandoning his paperwork for the morning and crawling into his bed and much warmer blankets for the evening.

Still, while saying things had calmed would be a bit of a lie, it was a lie that he could comfortably say could actually come true sooner instead of later. The calmer aer meant the monsters were actually calmer and breeding less, patrolling the city boarders was giving the less kindly aligned Knights something to do instead of bullying those in the Lower Quarter, and Ioder was slowly weeding out the corrupt nobles in his court. A few connivances were an acceptable loss for that, in Flynn’s mind. With a tired smile he licked the tip of his pen and set back to work: working as temporary Commandant was a lot less exciting then 13-year-old Flynn of his past would have ever guessed when he decided that joining the Knights was his life goal. Less fighting monsters and defending the Empire and more pay ledgers and mission reports.

‘I can almost understand why Alexei always looked so unhappy…’ he thought, then at once shook the thought away as tactless. Alexei might have been a traitor to the Empire, but at one time he HAD been a loyal Knight, and it was ill luck to speak badly of the dead, even if it was just in your own head.

“I’ll finish this up, then sleep.” he muttered to no one, tapping his chin with the pen once again. If he got four hours of sleep he’d be set for the morning briefing with Master Ioder, then the beginning of his trip back to Aurion for the Fellowship Celebration- there would be a lot of guilds there, and if he was lucky Brave Vesperia would make an appearance. Seeing Yuri and his friends again for the first time outside a brief passing here and there since the Event was just the thing he needed to cheer his exhaustion. And he could sleep the night away in his house there, unwind for a day or two before coming back. Part of him knew he wouldn’t be able to stay away that long, but for now the teeny hope was enough to fuel him to finish his work.

At least until his chin landed on his chest and he was fast asleep, pen still in hand even when he woke up in a completely different castle and with a very new set of problems.

FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:
[There’s a small doodle on the top left corner of the page, a pointless little spiral, like someone is testing the pen they’re writing with. Eventually neat evenly spaced script starts filling the page, though the handwriting is almost TOO nice, more like someone trained themselves to write this way instead of their natural style.]

I feel a little silly writing this, but there’s something about this ledger. I’ve never seen so many different conversations laid out like this before, so I can only hope that there’s something more going on here. And worse comes to worse no one will see this anyway.

My name is Flynn Scifo, and I’m not exactly sure where I am. I was in my office and must haven fallen asleep before waking up here, and any help at all would be appreciated. Thank you.

[After a few moments a voice can be heard, Flynn having no idea that a notebook can record anything outside what he writes. He sounds much more worried and much less stiff then his writing would have indicated]

Estellise is going to be upset with me if I passed out with the lamp still on. [He sighs with annoyance] This is the strangest exhaustion dream I‘ve ever had, and Ioder is going to force me into resting. Damn it…

INTENT: I have a weakness for the classic knight archtype, and as for Flynn in Paradisa specifically I kinda want to explore him outside his overwhelming responsibilities back home.
