Sewing Machine Upgrade

Oct 26, 2005 12:26

So the sewing machine tech tells me that I am going to destroy my Babylock Espire if I continue to use it for the collage and free motion work that I am doing. Guess it is time to upgrade to a new machine.

I have looked at the Janome 6600 which is suppose to be a workhorse of a free motion and quilting machine. It has a drop-in bobbin which I particularly like but have been told is no good for free motion work. It sews very much like a heavy duty machine and I found the free motion was very clunky. But that could have been because I tried the Bernina first. I don't like the chart of stitches sitting on the tome of the machine seems clumsy.

I have also looked at the Bernina 440 which has the BSR - Bernina Stitch Regulator - which made the free motion stitching soooo smooth. I was amazed at the machine. It was definitely more comfortable to sit at but it has a vertical bobbin and it is $1,000 more than the Janome.

I am planning to go spend some time with each of these machines but that will have to wait until later this month. In the meantime I am trying to find out all that I can about these machines and any other that would be in the same category.

My last thought is do I trade in the Babylock or do I keep it so that ryuutchi can use it. Hate to give it up since I have all sorts of attachments and accessories for it.

sewing machines, quilting, sewing in general
