Day two of not getting any writing done but I've had freakishly long and exhausting days. As in gone between 8AM and 9:30PM for both. But it's not like it's been all bad. Work for most of it, and then hanging out with friends! (Yesterday it was with Dan, Erika, and her friend Kelly, and today it was with Tiffany). But! Today is the 15th of March, which means not only is it Et tu, Brutus day, but it is also Catoir's birthday!
So this is for
bottlingsound. I actually wrote some Tinsel! I would guess this would be in '85.
Part 2 will come later. (Tomorrow?)
.
“Catoir, when is your birthday?”
“... Why do you ask?”
Ayn glanced up from the paperwork spread out before her. “The port officials want all these documents filled out for the crew and you neglected to do it all. If we don't turn it in, then they'll kick us out of port before we can even land.”
“I didn't want to do it.”
“You're the captain!”
Catoir was silent for several seconds, not looking away from the book in his hands. “Make Feofan captain. He already drives the damn boat.”
“I have my hands full with steering the ship,” Feofan corrected. “I don't want to add the duties of captain on top of that.”
“Birthday, Catoir. Now.”
“....”
“I can see you. Don't pretend like you're not here.”
Catoir sighed and pushed his glasses up his nose. “March 15th.”
Ayn wrote it down, then stared at the date. “That's tomorrow!” She looked at the back of his head in surprise. “Why didn't you tell me sooner?! We should celebrate!”
“It's not that big of a deal. Birthday's were never a thing with my family.”
“At least let me take you out to dinner when we land tomorrow.”
“Everyone else will find out. I told you, it's not a big thing.”
“No one will know. It will be a small thing, just you and me.”
“Feofan will know.”
“Feofan won't tell anyone - will you, Feofan?”
The man in question shook his head and pantomimed sealing his lips. “Naught a word.”
“See?”
Catoir rolled his eyes and glared at Ayn over the back of the couch. “I don't celebrate birthdays. They're just another day out of the year, and it could be time spent doing something more productive.”
She crossed her arms over her chest and leaned back in her chair. “You guys took me out for my birthday.”
“That's because you like to celebrate your birthday. It was Kaito's idea.”
“I thought it was y-” Feofan cut himself off when he caught the sharp glare from Catoir.
Ayn didn't press for a follow-up. “Zoné looked pretty disappointed when we didn't take him out for his birthday.”
“Zoné is always disappointed when he doesn't get taken out for food regardless of the occasion.”
“... This is true.”
Catoir pushed his glasses out of the way, sighed, and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Listen, don't do anything for my birthday alright? We'll just carry on as normal. It will be fine enough.”
Grumbling to herself, Ayn returned to the papers she had been filling out.
PS I caved and bought Dustin O'Halloran's Lumiere album because I couldn't live without it in my life.
