[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]

Name: Ran Ryuuren
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Fandom: Saiunkoku Monogatari (light novels)
Timeline: Between volume 12 and 15 of the light novels (sometime after Shuuei leaves the Ran Province for the capital, but before Ryuuren showed up again in volume 15).
History: http://saiunkokumonogatari.wikia.com/wiki/Ran_Ryuuren

But the Wiki isn't very complete, and focuses more on the anime, so I'm also going to write my own.

In the history of the Ran Clan, the name "Ryuuren" held special significance. Since the family began, the person bearing the name "Ran Ryuuren" would become an individual with power that rivalled that of the head of the Ran Clan, if he didn't become clan head himself. The name was only bestowed on those who were capable of assimilating vast amounts of knowledge, because being "Ryuuren" meant that they would be able to use the powers of the Blue Immortal who had powers over time, and only certain kinds of people were capable of channeling the Immortal without losing themselves.

Ryuuren was four when he became "Ran Ryuuren".

In exchange for the power and prestige the name gave them, the "Ryuuren" of the past had very little freedom. But when Ryuuren received his new name and title, his three eldest brothers (who were triplets) resigned as government officials and jointly took on the responsibility as head of the Ran Clan despite protests. They did this to give Ryuuren the freedom to choose whether or not to become clan head. As Shuuei later notes, this was a freedom that no other "Ryuuren" ever had.

When he was old enough, Ryuuren was allowed to leave the Ran Province and travel around the country on his own on the condition that he would take the Civil Exam and place in one of the top three places.

He took the exam when he was eighteen. It was there that he met Shuurei and Eigetsu.

Before that, Ryuuren didn't have any friends, Shuurei and Eigetsu were the first two people in his life that accepted him for who he was and wsn't scare away by his eccentricities. They became his "Soul Friends".

During the time in which Ryuuren lived in the dormitory before the examinations, the dorm building he lived in became known as the "Cursed 13th Building" because his flute playing was driving the other examinees insane. He also caused seven officials to resign. In the end, Ryuuren, Shuurei, Eigetsu and Hakumei were made to stay in the prisons until the exam instead. He finished the exam with the second highest score, and after fufilling his promise to his family, left to wander and didn't even bother showing up for the Shinshi Ceremony.

Before he leaves the capital, however, the Emperor asked Ryuuren to act as a sort of information gathereer for the court, since Ryuuren tended to wander everywhere.

Later on, Ryuuren was asked to deliver the governor's seal to Shuurei and Eigetsu in the Sa Province, because it was the most secure way to deliver it. This was because one, Ryuuren, with his clan's crest could bypass most blockades or security measures easily, two, Ryuuren was a profficient fighter and no one could take the seal oof him, and three, because really, who's going to suspect him of being the one to carry the seal, anyway?

He brought the seal to the Sa Province and, following that, left with Shuurei to return to the capital for the annual meeting of officials. Afterwards, he left to try to find out ways to help Eigetsu, who was slowly dying.

He returned to the Sa Province later to help rescue Eigetsu, and stayed with Shuurei and Eigetsu until it was time for them to leave. It is assumed that he went back to travelling afterwards.

In Volume 12, he returns to the Ran Province, specifically the home of the heads of the Ran Clan for some kind of family reunion. He apparently went looking for hot-springs in the mountains during a portion of the book. Eventually he showed up at the end after a fake magical artifact was broken, and calmed the storm that resulted from that event by playing his flute. Even more badly than usual, mind you, but, hey, it worked, so whatever.

After the events of Volume 12 of the light novel, Ryuuren disapears again, and doesn't reappear until volume 15. No one knows what he was doing during this period of time.

Character Personality:
The simplest way to describe Ryuuren would be to say he is as brilliant as he is strange.

He's constantly wearing incrtedibly flashy clothes, and wears a lot of strange things (such as vegetables, flowers or feathers) in his hair. He doesn't do this in an attempt to get attention, or to stick out, he genuinely thinks it looks good because Ryuuren's idea of beauty is different from the opions of the general populace.

The way Shuurei described it was to say the way Ryuuren saw the world differed from the rest of the world by 52 degrees. She reasoned that people's whose views differed by 45 or 180 degrees would still share some views with normal people, but Ryuuren's world view has basically no relation to the way normal people saw the world.

Ryuuren doesn't try to be different, he's just doesn't understand how to be normal. But when it's required of him, he can dress like a normal person...though to date he's onyl ever done it twice, and each time his friends almost didn't recognize him.

Because of this, and because of the title of "Ryuuren", he has trouble communicating with normal people, but through Shuurei and Eigetsu he began to learned. He'd drape himself all over them and drag them everywhere, all the while learning to adjust his strength so he doesn't hurt them. And when he talks to them, he slowly learns what you should, or should not say to people and how to show he cares (even if it's still awkward for him to show it).

In some ways, Ryuuren is really simple. If he makes a promise he'll keep it. He doesn't tell lies not even tell white lies; if he thinks that dress makes you look fat, he'll tell you very bluntly without hesitation. And he hates people who do bad things. Compared to eating a feast in a large house, he'd be happier eating a vegetable hotpot made by his friend in her run down house (of course, rundown houses suit his sense of good taste) and nothing would make him happier than if his friends agreed to go travelling with him. He loves his brothers and knows they love him, even if he's not very good at showing it. And while he moves at his own rhtythm and only does what he wants to do, he's willing to be dragged into his friends problem, because they're the only ones who would ask him to stay away and not become involved. In his mind, this means that they're the only ones allowed to take advantage of him and his power, and once Ryuuren has decided on something, it's nigh impossible to change his mind.

He doesn't appear to have much of a temper, never really getting more than "a little bit annoyed", and the only person thus far who had been able to make him feel like this was his brother Shuuei. When he's upset Ryuuren just tends to mope, usually by sitting outside and staring at the scenery.

Character Abilities:
Ryuuren can play the flute really badly. No, really, his playing is so horrible that birds literally fall out of the sky, and prolonged exposure to his flute playing distresses livestock and adversely affects the mental health of other people. He plays it so badly it's practically a skill. Especially since he can play all other instruments, including upright flutes, flawlessly but apparently not the flute, which is his favourite instrument. Why this is, no one knows.

During his travels, the current heads of the Ran Clan would only give him a small amount of money as a sort of allowance. Over the years, Ryuuren would take this allowance and, through gambling, make more money out of it. He became known as the "Dragon Flute Gambling Master", a travelling gambling master who cleaned out whole casinos and then play the flute afterwards to deal a "finishing blow". He may or may not be cheating.

He is also well-versed in martial arts for reasons that really only make sense to him. (It has something to do with nature and nature's beauty and how it is strong, therefore Ryuuren must practice the martial arts.) He also has slightly above-average physical strength from toting around his flute (which was heavy enough that someone with no physical training could barely even lift).

He is also a genius, able to pass the Official State Exams with the second highest score after apparently spending all of the study period doing nothing but eating, sleeping and playing his flute.

Ryuuren also possesses an assortment of incredibly random skills, like being able to produce a dove after clapping his hands. None of these are supernatural in nature, just things he'd asked street performers to teach him on his travels.

In addition to all that, "Ryuuren" was also the name/title given to people who could be able to channel the Blue Immortal. They will also have access to a fraction of his powers. The Blue Immortal, among the Eight Immortals was the one with the power over time. He could see into the past, present and future, and even to intervene. It also seemes to give "Ryuuren" a certain degree of control over weather.

Character Weaknesses:
Ryuuren is a genius and, like all geniuses in Saiunkoku Monogatari, he's also a bit of an idiot. This is because being a genius means that he doesn't see the world the same way as normal people do, and as such will sometimes do things that make no sense to normal people. His priorities are also skewed by the way he sees the world. For example, he was once tasked to bring on object of great importance to someone, but when the person asked for it, he gave them a pear. This was because, to Ryuuren, the pear was a more suitable present and more important than the other thing he was holding, and she really didn't specify that she was asking for the seal.

After the exam he had skipped the Shinshi Ceremony afterwards, but it would have made little difference either way since the Minister of Civil Affairs who was in charge of where to put which officials claimed that Ryuuren was completely useless. This was because Ryuuren doesn't listen to anyone but himself. Despite being a genius, he was entirely unusable as an official because he was more or less a wild card, the kind that would only do something when he wanted to, and would more likely than not, choose to do it his way. Because of this, the Minister of Civil Affairs outright said that he would rather have a useful normal person as an official than a genius like Ryuuren.

Ryuuren is also incredibly lonely. Because of the previously mentioned weaknesses, Ryuuren has trouble interacting with other people. Even his fourth older brother admitted that he always found his brother strange, and would sometinmes rather his younger brother was someone else. He's gotten better since meeting Shuurei and Eigetsu, the two people who were willing to accept him no matter what, and through interacting with them have learned more about how to be around other people, but his interactions with people remain awkward, when it happens at all.

Following on that note, he also tends to upset people...and then becomes confused over why they were so angry in the first place.

[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]

What are the abilities that your character will retain in Soul Campaign?
- martial arts skills and above average strength
- intelligence
- playing the flute badly and other instruments perfectly.

What are the weaknesses that your character will lose or gain in Soul Campaign?
- he'll keep all the weaknesses stated above.
- also it will be hard to find someone to resonate with him because...
1 - Not a lot of people understand him...or can stand him for long periods of time
2 - He wouldn't let just anyone wield him, not even for practice. It would have to be someone he honestly trusts.
- he won't know anything about this world and most of the information about the geography, history and culture of Saiunkoku won't apply here. He will have to relearn all of it. This also includes his gambling skills since I'm pretty sure all the games he knows don't exist here.
- will also lose the ability to use the abilities of the Blue Immortal

[ WEAPON ONLY SECTION ]

Why your character should be a Weapon: No matter what reality you're operating in, Ryuuren just isn't leadership material. Furthermore, despite the fact that Ryuuren will only do the things he chooses to do, the only times he uses his influence or power as "Ran Ryuuren" it had been to protect or further the goals of his friends or brothers. Even if his profficiency in martial arts should make him a Meister, personality wise, he would prefer to choose to let someone else use his power...that is, when he finds a Meister he would be willing to lend his power to.

What is your character's Weapon form?: A Chinese double-edged sword. No jeweled hilt, no strange markings and no serated edge, just a very normal looking Chinese double-edged sword with the carving of the Ran family crest on the hilt and a blue tassle. The reason for this is because when Ryuuren was channeling the Blue Immortal in volume 15 of the light novels, Shuuei had complained about how strange it was that Ryuuren actually acted more normal when he was channelling the Immortal. So, it makes sense that when he's actually doing something "strange" like transforming into a weapon, he would turn into something incredibly normal.

With minimal resonation, Ryuuren gives his Meister a boost in speed and strength, as well as knowledge on how to handle a double edged sword of the type he transforms into. Meister's with knowledge of how to use the weapon will not receive this knowledge, but the boosts are still there.

With decent resonation, Ryuuren can allow his Meister to teleport (since in canon he has a tendency to suddenly appear, and no one has any idea where he even came from.) When teleporting, the Meister holding Ryuuren will disapear in a puff of smoke and sparkles and flower petals and what sounds suspiciously like Ryuuren playing a long, note on his flute...unfortunately, they will also reappear in the same kind of fanfare (because that's just the way he rolls.) Teleportation is limited to a range of four metres all around.

[ SOUL INFORMATION ]

Soul Description: strange, honest, independant, intelligent, lonely, gentle.

Soul Appearance: On top of the soul is a bunch of spikes that hang down, shaped like his bangs, and it has what appears to be a ponytail. There appears to be something shaped like a feather sticking out from the top. The face on the soul often has its eyes closed as if sleeping. The colour is a deep, rich blue.

[ SAMPLES ]

First Person:

[When the feed turns on there's a young man in strange clothes and feathers in his hair on the screen, if his garish look isn't enough, he's also playing a flute...very badly. Finally (finally!) he stops.]

Greetings, Death City. My name is Ran Ryuuren and there is a very pressing issue I feel needs to be addressed.

[He plays another string of notes (there is what appears to be a thoughtful tone to it, but most of his listeners' ears are probably too busy bleeding to notice it).]

This city...its design leaves much to be desired.

[Because that's totally more important than, say, asking to see if anyone he knew was here. They would know to respond after hearing his name or catching the sound of his unforgetable flute playing.]

No doubt, such sights must be dampening the spirits of all those who reside in the city. [Pause. And then the proverbial lightbulb goes off.] No doubt that is why I have been brought here. Fear not citizens of Death City! I shall ease the suffering of your souls with my music.

[And he does just that. May Shinigami have mercy on your souls.]

Third Person:

Along one of the less used roads leading out of the Ran Province, a young man decked in brightly coloured clothes and flowers in his hair walked with something like the lovechild of a saunter and a skip. Following this young man was the sound of the local fauna screaming in pain and birds falling out of the skies as he played his flute while he went along his merry way.

He brought the flute away from his lips, though he continued to hold it aloft in the same manner as before, with his fingers still covering the same holes as Ryuuren looked up.

It had been exactly 132 days since he parted ways with his Soul Friend Number Two, and an ominous wind beginning to blow.

No. That wasn't right.

He frowned absentmindedly.

This wind had been blowing for a while now, but recent events had seen it picking up speed, gathering momentum as it made to spread into the other provinces.

Most people would scoff at that, chalk it up to Ryuuren being Ryuuren. But it was true. Anyone who knew the true nature of the name "Ran Ryuuren" would know he couldn't be anything but right about this. He didn't have full access to the Blue Immortal's powers, but knowledge was something he could receive freely, when he was allowed to have it.

He cocked his head to one side, as if listening for something. After a moment, he nodded and brought the flute back up, resuming both his playing and his march towards the capital once again.

Then he stopped.

Unlike the dirt road his feet had become accustomed to for a many miles now, the surface under his feet was smooth and hard. The sun was also gone.

However, besides halting his footsteps, one could barely tell he'd even noticed the change in scenary from the way he continued playing the flute with a calm and horendously ear-splitting tone. His expression was one of that was mildly curious, but not alarmed. When the screen flickered on, he stopped playing to listen (it was only polite, after all. Something Shuurei had drummed repeatedly into him). No weapons or powers...well, he knew that already from the missing weight where his sword should have been, and the lack of the presence of the Immortal at the back of his mind, though it was nice to know what had happened to them, he supposed.

...perhaps he may even learn something new during this detour from where he'd planned to go.
