This is the point where I really started to like Maric as a protagonist, which I didn't get from the first book. Sure it has a bit of "your fantasy is not match for my angst" to it, but just the fact that he simply and quickly sees the truth and turns his back on the fantasy life he really wants because he has to do his duty? Yeah, I'm buying him Maric the Savior.

Talking point the first: Katriel? What do you think she is? Demon? Ghost? Friendly-Neighbourhood-Fade-Spirit? A projection of Maric's own subconcious mind and determination?

My money is on Demon. Demon with a long term plan, but still a demon. What she's doing now is what Maric really wants from a SO, that level of pain, self sacrifice and helping. The naked elf chick in his bed? That's too shallow for King Angst.

I'm only halfway through this chapter, but yeah. This is the first time (in this book) I've enjoyed him as a protagonist, and also found him to be USEFUL as a protagonist. I mean, up until this point, I was struggling to find a reason why he was actually in this book, outside of the sort of flimsy reasoning of needing him to find Ortan thaig. I mean I LIKE him, and I was glad he was in the book, but he sort of felt tacked in for awhile. Glad he's finally getting a chance to show a little more depth in this round.

Talking point the second, reading the way the book treated the fade dreams, I'm actually more disappointed with how DAO did it. Why use the blurry island in the fade instead of having it look real? They already had all the maps and resources they needed for it, why not go for it?

Nicolas and Julien are GAY? I didn't see that coming a thousand miles away with neon lights, not at all.
