Hoping someone on my list might have a recommendation as to my motherboard / memory prob. I've got an older machine whose life I'm trying to extend by adding memory:
Original Config:
Motherboard - Abit VT7 (supports up to PC3200 400 MHz)
Chip - Intel 2.4 Socket 478
Memory 2 x 512 MB 2700 for 1GB total
Award Bios v. 14 - latest version for that board according to the Abit website
Purchased a 2 gig kit (2 x 1GB 3200 400 MHz) of Patriot memory. Not all memory is registering.
Either of the single sticks in DIMM1 will register 1GB of memory and works fine. Placing the second one in DIMM2 will make the system register 1.5 GB (as verified in Post and BIOS) of total memory instead of 2 GB and the system runs VERY slowly - over 20 minutes to fully boot and the system is unusable. It works like I have 128 megs on there (mouse moves slowly / icons don't draw, etc...). This happens no matter which stick I use for DIMM1 and 2.
Placing the second stick in DIMM 3 for DDR (as per the mb manual) and the system won't boot at all. This all worked fine with the previous config.
I initially would have thought that one of the sticks was bad if not for the fact that this happens no matter which stick I have in which slot.
Thoughts?
