I have been mainlining TV like you wouldn't believe. Abandoned House, cause I'm not actually fannish about it and can always go back later. Deadwood and Slings and Arrows are on the backburner for shows that are still ongoing.
Adam Baldwin! And some other people too. Seriously, this show is great fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously- in fact, I've counted at least 4 segments of out-and-out slapstick- whick is good, since it doesn't stand up to much serious scrutiny at all. But as pure fun, it works. Nerdy shrimpy sidekick is great. Sister and sister's boyfriend are various levels of annoying, but the hate/hate relationship between sidekick and sister is entertaining. Chuck himself is a lanky floppy-haired type of cute, who is not exactly destined to be one of the truly great characters on TV but nevertheless has decent comic sensibilities to bring to the table. And Adam Baldwin! Adam Baldwin plays the bad-assed cold blooded NSA killer (who is nevertheless a bit dense) and there is just enough of Jayne left in that character to make him instantly familiar and loved. For serious, guys, if Adam Baldwin keeps on like this I will follow him from show to show like a lovesick puppy till the end of his days. Plus, I now totally want an icon that says "I don't joke about quiche."
It does make me pretty nervous, though, that imdb only credits Adam Baldwin with three episodes. If they write him out next episode... well, it's not so much that I'll stop watching as that I'll stop caring, you know?
So first of all, Kevin McKidd is just as absolutely arresting as I remember. (That face! How in the world do you ever look away from that face?) The dynamic with the brother seems like it may be slightly over-loaded down with past history angst, but then, when have I ever objected to a set of angsty brothers on my TV? He's played by Reed Diamond, who is sort of my ultimate H!ITG actor. I first saw him on Judging Amy, where I hated him. Not his fault. Men on Judging Amy tended to suffer from major cases of Lorelai's Boyfriend Syndrome. You know, where the actor and the character are both fine or even wonderful but all your sympathy lies with her and he's just wrong for her in ways that she's too immature to realize and deal with so you have to hate him anyway? Anyway, Reed Diamond is everywhere. Numb3rs, West Wing, CSI, Law and Order, Medium, Ghost Whisperer, Crossing Jordan, Vanished, Without a Trace, The Shield, Homicide... half of those shows I've only watched one or two episodes of, and yet there hs is! Inevitably! I've reached the point where, whenever Reed Diamond appears on my screen, I feel the urge to shout "Stop monopolizing TV! Go away and let the other actors play!" But this is my issue and I shall overcome it.
That said, I think he and McKidd are well cast as brothers. I love shows where the casting lets you actually beleive that there's some shared genes going on there, you know? Numb3rs was the ultimate champ of family casting. While I wouldn't trade either of our boys away, Supernatural wasn't so hot on this front. Anyway, they look right and they seem comfortable together. They have angst and issues, obviously, but there is a type of comfort together and it works.
Anyway, as I said earlier, I desperately want to like this show. There are some good points- they didn't drag out his wife not believing him, which would have gotten tiresome. Their cues for the time shifts are great. McKidd rocks my world, and his manic energy when he was smashing up his patio to save his marriage? Riveting. The accent slippage is pretty bad, but I just find it sexy so I won't bitch. So far, though, I'm a bit dissapointed because it's been less cool science fiction mystery and more Touched by an Angel, and I think we can all agree that Touched by an Angel is an experience none of us wants to repeat. I'll give it the customary new-show three episodes, then two episodes more cause Kevin McKidd owns me, then another episode if we actually start to get intruiging development of the Livia thing. But in that time, it had better become a hell of a lot less made of stirring strings while the bitter daughter learns to forgive her father, no? Cause Kevin McKidd owns me, but even he's not hot enough to pull off the faintly glowing halo.
Did Mohinder actually get prettier? I think he might have. At the end of last season I made all the squee-full predictions of Matt and Mohinder raising little Molly together, and THEY CAME TRUE. Seriously, am I good or what? I cannot even describe how incredibly bouncily freakishly happy that makes me. Poor cute terrified creepy sad Molly with her two daddies! And Matt is actually not annoying anymore. And, bizzarely, Mohinder now kicks 12 kinds of ass, even if his superpower is lame-o magic blood.
When the Haitian reunited with Bennet, if Dustin hadn't been sitting there, I would have squealed loud enough to freak out the neighbors.
I adore what is being done with the backstory of the previous generation and their plots.
I am so glad that Claire is actually starting to think thinky thoughts about her abilities and the practical ramifications thereof and the way that she could actually help people, instead of the self-centeredness that her character started with. I like this progression. I also like our new pretentous high school hero.
No Nikki! No, we replaced her with another innocent killer woman. I think someone on the writing staff has a Very Weird Issue. Her brother is hot as hell, though, so it might be okay.
Speaking of the hot, Peter spent a large amount of time tied up shirtless. I don't have a clue what happened during those scenes. (Be honest. Do you?) I really don't care, either. I just wish they'd kept him tied up longer. Say, till the fourth or fifth episode. That would have been good. Also! If Peter is still amnesiac- maybe knows facts about himself but that's not the same as remembering- when he meets back up with Nathan? Especially given the way Nathan has spectacularly self-destructed without Peter, (which I think is startlingly OOC but could warm to). That would be awesome in a totally slashy fangirlish way.
And, due to
trollprincess rambling, Wentworth Miller picspams on my flist, and Ctrl-Alt-Del's
parody, I'm watching
So really, Wentworth Miller is the only thing to talk about in that show, isn't he? He is very good looking. And very tall, which of course I have been rather obsessed by lately. And for the entire first episode, he does nothing but stare into the middle distance with a slight smirk. We're 35 minutes in before he displays anything resembling a facial expression. I was really quite disappointed, because he wasn't believable as enough of a Magnificant Bastard to carry that smug and untouched air, and I just didn't find him actually that hot. But then! In the second episode, all is forgiven. Because he doesn't have it all under control, and he fucks up majorly, and the prison is a volatile and dangerous environment that even our magnificent planner may not be able to deal with, but he copes and adapts. After the race riot, curled up in his cell with his shirt covered in the blood of a dead man, crouched and shaking and terrified, I finally believed him as a character. And then! In the infirmary, when the results of the test come back and he just *grins*. The relief and the joy and the oh-thank-god, and it comes out as this smile that just shines, and suddenly, right there, he was HOT. I finally saw it, finally saw what everyone is so wild about, and yeah. Wow.
In short, damned lot of potential in this show, now isn't there? (Also, if it keeps going on this trajectory, I will majorly ship Michael/Sucre. Just saying)
Dude. That was a LOT of TV to watch in like two days. Guilt now. But! It's good that I'm all caught up now. That means I can head off to Vegas, and when I get back there will be Supernatural waiting for me! It's like, Christmas and every birthday I've ever had all wrapped up in one. Seriously, I have NEVER been this excited for a Season premier. Literally never. *squees to the point of hysteria*
