First: Could I possibly love the Leverage trio more? With Alec and Eliot and the spoilery thing at the start! And Parker and the other spoilery thing at the end! And the woman telling Eliot the spoilery thing! Dead of love.
(Confession: by halfway through the first season I had defaulted to slashing Eliot and Alec- because, well, default- but I really don't. Because Christian Kane has fucking fabulous chemistry with women and I love watching him flirt and charm and be unexpected and I sort of don't want to read him gay, at all, even a little-- which is currently tripping me up occasionally in CWRPS, actually. And Parker/Hardison is that oh-so-rare unicorn, the canon het ship I love to pieces.)
Have been reading so much long fic! Can't possibly keep up with
spn_j2_bigbang, even reading only most appealing of the non-sequel RPS complete-AU ones. And then I just realized that
stargate_summer just started posting. Aaack. Help! Recs?
RPS recs- (all of these can be read as completely original fic. I promise. In fact, possibly they're better that way)
Document- So, this is old, but it's the best transfic I've read in a really really long time (very different, in theme and style, from the excellent transfics in SGA fandom). Um, Bandom- Pete/Patrick, in which Patrick is a transguy. But I wouldn't know Patrick Stump if he punched me in the nose, so. Read it anyway. It's just about... a guy's life. A guy who falls in love and sings in a band and has friends and deals with medical issues and gets heartbroken and figures some things out about himself and tries to navigate intimacy and manages a career and just sort of lives a life, and it's maybe a little oddly paced and lacking a few emotional beats, but it's exactly the kind of mundanity I love in fic, well characterized and well written and at times laugh-out-loud funny. Small self-harm warning, not explicit and in the past.
Reanimated- In which Jared manages real estate in Heaven and Jensen works as an attorney in Hell. Extreme boredom and lack of booze convince Jared he needs a change of scenery. Hijinks ensue. This fic is delightful; not nearly as cracky as it sounds, while still exactly cracky enough to be a rocking good time. The worldbuilding is perhaps best taken with a good helping of faith (it's best not to scrutinize Hell's economic system too closely), but the cute is just mind-boggling. Comes with character death warning, obviously, but they don't mind too much.
Kisses Sweeter Than Wine- An entry in the well-worn genre of "Jared is a [quirky career]. Jensen is a [somewhat related quirky career]. They meet-cute, fall for each other, have a misunderstanding, make up, and have sex." It's a formula, sure, but it's a good formula. In this one, Jared is a celebrity chef and Jensen is a food magazine writer, and, as is usual with this formula, what makes it work is the level of research and detail and passion the author obviously invested in the quirky careers.
The Life and Times of Lois Lane- in which it isn't easy being married to a superhero. This is exactly what you'd expect from that one sentence summary, and while it's a much shorter, smaller story than it feels like it could have been, I am a total sucker for stories about day-to-day texture and mundane moments, you know? So this isn't particularly plotty, but as a lot of really endearing vignettes behind the scenes of a superhero, I loved it a lot.
By All Means, Rome- It's a Roman Holiday fic. It's fantastic. It does fix the ending, and... well, I'm not entirely sure Roman Holiday should be fixed, but if you want something comfortable and romantic and happy-making, this is a good place to get it.
