In the physical world, Money ruled.
Breathing was technically free, though where you did it came with costs. Life was very much like making a scrap quilt. Each fabric scrap was a bill or a cost & it was up to you to piece them together in the order that fit & sew them all together with your limited thread & time. Making Ends Meet, Winter had heard it called.
Elroy did not deal with it well.
He had married Winter for love, knowing that she had nothing. While he loved her still & loved their two children, he fretted over how to ‘make ends meet’ & give their children everything they needed.
It was a stressful time for both of them.
Winter decided that pride wasn’t worth the potential loss of her family. She called her Father & asked for help.
Proud Grandfather that he was, he was more than happy to assist.
Winter coaxed Elroy inside their now larger home, asking him to help her move furniture & decorate a bit. Elroy was awed & had hundreds of questions, but Winter was forbidden from divulging most of the answers. All she could tell him was that it was a gift.
No sooner had they finally upgraded from nothing to something, the Karma’s were the target of some of the less welcome members of the community.
Winter had the nous to call the police quietly.
They lost a couple of things, but they eventually caught the offender. It was nothing they couldn’t replace though.
The commotion had woken Liam. Winter tried to explain as simply as she could what had happened, but Liam was far too young to understand. She sighed & sang with him to calm him before tucking him into his cot.
The little bit of extra help they had been given helped pay for someone to look after Liam & Rachel so that Elroy & Winter could both work. She had a heart of gold, that woman.
Though sometimes, an attention span of more than 5 seconds would have been better.
Winter couldn’t believe how fast her children grew. It was as though one minute they were crawling & wearing nappies & the next they were big enough for their own bed & were reading on their own.
Rachel had a definite fear of the elderly Sitter. Winter couldn’t understand why….
Liam didn’t mind her, but was always excited to see his Dad. No matter what he was doing, he would drop it & rush out to greet Elroy the moment he arrived home from work.
But then it happened.
The Incident.
Winter was out tending her veggie garden, as she often did of an evening. She was treating them with an organic anti fruit fly spray when it happened. Liam was on the side balcony playing chess with Cairo Reenboog.
The plants….. took her over.
It was difficult even for Elroy to recognise her.
In shock & fear of what had happened to his beloved, Elroy asked Cali to collect her boy. She didn’t seem worried at all about what had happened to Winter & instead offered her help if they needed it.
Winter took the change in stride.
Elroy didn’t like the change in her; she didn’t sleep or eat, yet never got ill or weak from it. She spent a lot more of her time in the water too.
Then they discovered she was pregnant. Elroy wondered how her condition would affect their unborn child.
Quite the stoic young lad, Liam took his mother’s condition as a learning curve. Discussions over the breakfast table were difficult sometimes for Elroy. Some answers he just wasn’t willing to give to his young son. Others he didn’t even have.
“Even if she’s not hungry, why doesn’t mother join us at the table?”
Liam took great interest in his mother’s garden. She allowed him to tend it under her watchful eye.
He also loved trying to catch dinner.
Being on maternity leave gave Winter more time to spend with Rachel as well as Liam. Rachel loved her time with her mother & constantly pointed & made “ahh” noises about the leaves that had replaced Winter’s long, glossy locks.
Labour was just as, if not more painful, in her plantlike condition. Outside, her screams echoed off the rocks.
Her daughter was born safely & healthy.
Grace.
Winter could not be happier.
