I just had this thought about a Life on Mars fic which linked all of Gene's female-name nicknames for Sam to archetypal female characters in stories which feature a sudden upsetting of one's environment and expcectations; Dorothy for Dorothy of The Wizard of Oz, Alice for Alice in Wonderland, probably branching off to Meg from A Wrinkle In Time and Susan and Lucy from The Chronicles of Narnia. The relationships between Sam's roles in 1973 and the roles of the characters he's nicknamed after could be explored in both plot and metaphor.
Please someone tell me that either (a) this was intended in the LoM writers' choice of nicknames already and I just haven't gone back to check recently enough to put two and two together, or (b) someone has already written this fic so I don't have to.
