Sam tried to smile, folding Pushkin's poem neatly down the center. "We're good at keeping secrets," she said. "Aren't we?"

"Too good?" he asked.

Mrhmgh. This hits for a number of reasons.

It's what I think may be the ultimte tragedy of the SGC: they're out doing wonderful things, glorious things, expanding the known-by-humans (or at least Earth-humans) universe... but it's from one base in Colorado springs, and the rest of the world goes by as it always has. If you look at it, so little filters out of the SGC--it saves Earth from the problems it gets them into, and it saves other planets all the time, but it has yet to effect Earth positively and palpably. If anything, since the Trust got set up, the local net effect has been a minus.

And it's not that they don't care, or that they're unaffected by the condition of Earth, or that they consciously place Earth lower on the totem pole than the planets Out There that they're liberating, it's just a consequence of the silence. We're good at keeping secrets. Too good?

Oh, SAM.

And I like the friendship between Sam and Daniel, and Jack being quietly annoyed in the background.

Oh, Jack's irrational hatred of all things Russian. You've gotta love that man. (It's worked its way into my personal canon that vodka is the one alcohol Jack flat-out refuses to drink. He'll drink something noxious like a brain haemhorrage or a girly drink like a strawberry daquiri before he'll touch vodka.

Jack's irrational hatred of all things Russian drives me up the wall sometimes when watching an episode that involves Russians. You just feel so sorry for the Russians, who're only there to be cannon fodder anyway, and in the end Jack still acts like the Russians kicked his puppy.

I kinda want to see an Iraqi come on the show, because I'm quite sure that Jack would blow a gasket. (I love the Russians. But then, this is par for the course for me; I adore Jack, but I also adore Ba'al, and so on. Jack has Issues, but then, all of them do.)

Really beautiful Sam and Daniel interaction. Jack's frustration (jealousy?) is cute and in character. I love Daniel in the role of teacher - he does it well. Excellent story and beautifully written. It has a lot of exquisite detail.

Jack's irrational aversion to all things Russian is just too much fun, sometimes :).

Thanks!

Oh, fantastic. Here via stargateficrec as well, and really happy to have found Daniel being so fantastically linguisty, great friendship, lovely story and elegant cultural detail.

Thanks!

Thanks!

It's always fun to just write something with Daniel being a linguist. I don't get the opportunity to indulge myself like that in too many canons.
