My Thoughts On the NY Mosque Issue

My thoughts on the whole NY Mosque issue:
1. It is a distraction. There are bigger issues facing us. I really wonder what is slipping by while the media focuses on this.
2. As long as it is not built with government money, I don't care. In the economic times we find ourselves in now, government spending money on a community center (with or without mosque) is idiotic. While we have been arguing about this, congress has repeatedly attempted to cut food stamps while there are people who desperately need them.
3. Both sides need to chill the fuck out. When I even try to make someone see the view from the other side, they get all defensive and bring up past crimes and/or quotes from religious texts to prove their point. This kind of thinking is what leads to generational conflicts like we see in the Balkans. I really don't care who raped whose goat a 500-2000 years ago. Everyone involved is dead and buried. Get over it.

As an aside, the subject of a Greek Orthodox church that was destroyed when one of the towers fell has come up. I've looked into it. The reason it has not been rebuilt is because the people of the church want the government to pay them a ton of money to rebuild it. My answer is no. At most, they should get the assessed cost of rebuilding the church the way it was. They should not be getting over $60 million dollars (unless that was one spectacular church). (Link to source) This is yet another distraction.
