VA. School Bans All Touching

Summary: Kilmer Middle School in Vienna, Virginia has banned all physical contact between students. This article came about because a student was punished for putting his arm around his girlfriend’s shoulders. The school administrators reasoning is that the students don’t know the difference between appropriate and inappropriate touching.

My take: Of course the students don’t know what is always appropriate. That is one of the socialization skills you learn in school. You also learn how to handle it when someone touches you in a way you don’t like. In my opinion, this is the school administration ducking out on making judgement calls.
