Hearts in Atlantis is a Stephen King novel. But it isn't a horror. Nor is it one of his fantasy novels. It has supernatural elements in it.. but I would say mostly, it is a book about Vietnam.
The book is split into 5 seperate stories. The first take up almost half of the book, and is the basis for the recent film (which caused me to read the books). The next three stories are all about (in one way or another) characters that appear in the first story. Each story is told in a very different style. The final story merges the other stories together, and provides a conclusion.
The stories were thought provoking, and sad. Vietnam is something I know very little about being a) British, and b) too young. The stories show the multiple-facades of the war.. and make you want to learn more.
I wouldn't say the style is at Stephen Kings best.. but the subject matter certainly is.
A recommended read, preferably before seeing the film.
