“You’ve got it all wrong!” the little girl exclaimed huffily. “Gryffindors are brave, Ravenclaws are smart and Hufflepuffs are nice! It’s not rocket science!”
Definitely muggle-born. Draco sprawled in his seat, chewing his quill. Father would have a fit if he learnt that he was finishing homework on the Hogwarts Express, but nowadays Draco found it difficult to care about what Father thought.
Or what anyone thought.
“How about Slytherin?” someone asked.
Draco listened closely as the bossy first year started off again. “You don’t want to go there. Slytherins are evil and nasty. They…”
She trailed off as the train stopped. Draco stepped out, unable to decide if he was amused or annoyed. Just a child, he decided. He had been worse. He dragged his trunk along, trying to find a carriage. A shriek made him screech to a halt. Draco turned around, just in time to see a certain first year trip and crash to the ground.
Ouch.
Heeding his instincts, he started walking away. After all, she deserved it. That thought made him stop again. If everyone got what they deserved, where would he be? Draco sighed and returned, extending a hand to the child.
“It’s okay. You’re alright.”
She looked up at him with teary eyes and wiped her face with a dirty hand. Draco automatically offered his handkerchief. “You’re the boy from the train,” she sniffed.
“That’s right. Are you hurt?”
She shook her head, offering him a shaky smile. “Thank you. I’m Allison Berkeley.”
Draco smirked and inclined his head. “Draco Malfoy from Slytherin. At your service, Miss Berkeley.” Her eyes widened and Draco chuckled, patting her cheek.
As he left, the chattering recommenced.
“I hope I get Gryffindor,” someone said.
“You can keep it,” Allison sniffed disparagingly. “I’m going to Slytherin.”
Draco grinned.
