"Every once in a while, I can get something right," Blake said, chomping down on his wrap. "I agree. We should head out. I'm rested enough, and the Pokemon seem to be healed. We can get going after the meal."
Kendra and Blake soon made it to the entrance of Mt. Moon. The grassy areas had become sparser, giving way to lots of rock. Kendra made a face to herself. She wasn't keen on such ugly surroundings. Still, she could deal with it
( ... )
"Sticking to the path doesn't seem too terribly difficult," Blake muttered. Dark tunnels were not exactly his idea of a good place to be, particularly when the cave's maintenance crew gives a stern warning.
"At least we're not fumbling around in the dark, right? And the wild ones around here, they should be fairly easy to deal with, with our typings. There's no need to worry at all, Kendra."
"The only thing I'm worried about is getting through the mountain in time for dinner," Kendra said cheerfully, punching Blake in the arm. "All right, let's go." She set off, Olive skipping along beside her.
Kendra and Blake walked along the path without incident for about an hour, keeping up a light conversation as they went. There were no wild Pokemon about, and the two trainers speculated to each other that the construction had driven them away.
"Hey, do you hear something?" Kendra held up a hand for silence. "I thought I heard something..."
"Hm..." Kendra was silent for a little longer, and this time she heard the sound again. The noise of wings got louder until a Zubat burst into the lit area with a screech.
"All right, time for a battle! Olive, use Acid!" Kendra wasted no time in ordering the attack, but though the Zubat screeched again in pain, it seemed to brush off the attack as though it were nothing. In return, the Zubat used what Kendra's Pokedex identified as Leech Life, and Olive wobbled on her little feet. Following that up, the Zubat screeched again. This new sound not only hit Olive, but it washed over the rest of the party as well. Kendra only barely registered the computerized voice of her Pokedex identifying this as a Supersonic attack. She was too busy squeezing her head and trying to keep her thoughts straight. Even when the attack had passed it took her a moment to realize that Olive and the Zubat were both gone.
Kendra looked at Blake, dazed. How could she have let Olive get run off like that? What had happened, really? It had all been so sudden, after all...
She had to focus. "Um..." Kendra realized she was holding her Pokedex. Inspired, she looked at Blake. "Hey, Blake! You're a nerd. Can you make it so we can use the Pokedex's sound capturing feature to track the Zubat or Olive's cries?"
"Ouch," Blake said, pretending he wasn't bothered while fishing out his Pokedex, "It's a living. But, sure."
No time to be too offended. He flipped the Pokedex open and punched in some buttons. It was actually a lot easier than most people would think to do something like that. Anyone that read the manual would know how.
"The mic volume's turned way up. It tracks Zubat and Oddish. After that, it's like a divining rod. So, we need to follow them once we track them."
He waved the device around, pointing it in random directions until, pointing towards the right of the well-lit path they were supposed to be following, Olive's voice could be faintly heard on from the Pokedex's speakers.
"Wow, you're awesome!" Kendra was so pleased, she gave Blake a hearty slap on the back. "Let's go. You lead the way since you're the one with the tracker and with Pokemon."
Blake sighed, then pressed on. He ran off of the track, the lights from the path getting dimmer and dimmer as they pressed on. Eventually, the only light they had was that of the Pokedex. This was probably the kind of lighting a Zubat would prefer, but it probably wasn't the preferred lighting for a chipper grass-type Pokemon.
Eventually, the path got to a low and narrow tunnel. Olive's voice was coming in much louder.
"Looks like we're going to have to squeeze through that..." Blake said, not keen on tight spaces.
"Ugh. And it'll be all dark on the other side." Kendra couldn't suppress a shudder. However, it was her Pokemon they were tracking. "All right, I'll go first. No pain, no gain!" Without giving herself time to think, she dropped to the ground and took off her pack, tucking the straps around her boot. That way, she'd pull the pack after her as she crawled. Then, with a deep breath, Kendra entered the tunnel.
The crawl seemed to take forever. The rocks were rough, and it was just plain terrifying to be enclosed in such a small area without even being able to see the end. At one point, Kendra had to fight a mental battle with herself to prevent a panic attack. Finally, she came to the end of the tunnel. Scrambling out, she turned and faced the opening. Cupping her hands around her mouth, she said, "Hey, Blake? I made it through! C'mon!"
Blake dropped his things and started into the tunnel. Dark enclosed spaces were not his thing, so he tried to distract himself as he crawled. He tried counting. He tried counting backwards. He tried thinking about himself on a beach, sipping a fruit drink. He found all of these distractions very hard to maintain thanks to the blinding darkness of the tunnel.
He put his Pokedex in his mouth as he crawled, hoping that the light would keep him sane. It helped just enough to get him out of the tunnel.
He heard Kendra calling him as he made it out of the tunnel about to his shoulders, but as he was about to escape the confined pathway, he found his right leg caught on a root. This was the kicker.
"I'm stuck. I'm stuck I'm stuck I'm stuck..." Blake was stuck. He was stuck, stuck, stuck.
"Whoa, cool down, dude," Kendra said, paling. Being stuck in a tunnel in the dark in Mt. Moon was a perfect reason to panic, but they would be in serious trouble if they did, Blake especially.
"Chill, chill," Kendra muttered. By the light of the Pokedex, she crouched next to Blake, put a hand on his exposed shoulder. "Listen, dude, you gotta say calm, okay? We'll get you outta there if I gotta bust down this mountain to do it. Now how're you stuck?"
Blake called his Spearow back.

Rather than break the silence by saying he hadn't heard anything, he just shook his head. He looked to Sai. Sai also shook its head.
Still, Kendra probably heard something. And if it made noise before, it would probably make noise again.

Regaining his senses and his awareness, he realized that, while Kendra and Sai were still there, Olive and the menace were no where to be found.
"Kendra, we need to move fast. Any ideas on how to trail that Zubat?"
