"Nicely done," Blake said with a clap. Type-advantages could be rough, he'd read. "Not too many sound bytes on that one, though. We've got quite a trip ahead, so I'm not too worried about that. Excellent work."
His Psyduck looked on with curiousity. It also cringed to itself at the sight of an Absorb attack. Sai would have to keep on Olive's good side. "Duck," it offered the Oddish.
"Let's look for some more Pokemon," Kendra said. "We'll get some more sound bytes, and Olive will get to kick some more bug butt." She pulled her Pokedex out of the back pocket of her jeans and pointed it at Olive. The reading on the screen said that Olive was nearly at full strength, definitely strong enough to battle another Pokemon. Absorb was a useful attack. Olive reached out with a leaf and patted Sai gently on the head.
Not more than a few yards up the path was a tree where a bunch of Metapods were hanging out in their cocoons. "Jackpot!" Kendra crowed. "C'mon, Blake, let's fight 'em. I've read that Metapods are sooo easy to fight 'cause they don't even know any attacks. Your Psyduck should get some battle experience, too." With that, she ordered Olive to attack the hapless Metapods.
"I'll do the same," Kendra said. She slipped on a pair of sweatpants and a loose t-shirt and then looked at Olive. The Oddish was dozing on Kendra's pillow. "I'll need my pillow, you know." The Oddish looked at her and then rolled to one side. "Thanks. You want to sleep in your Pokeball or...?" The Oddish just continued to doze where it was. "All right," said Kendra. "Fine by me."
Kendra lay down with a sigh. She was beat! She hadn't thought that telling a Pokemon what to do would be that exhausting, but combining walking through the forest with the rush of battle, and you got one tired girl. Kendra closed her eyes. She barely noticed when Blake came back in to the tent.
Pants and shirt exchanged for much sillier yet much more comfortable red and blue striped pajamas, Blake slipped back into the tent and into his sleeping bag. He attached his headphones to his Poketech radio and turned it on to his favorite station: the Lucky Channel station. He flipped off the lantern and rolled over on his side, concentrating on sleep.
Day broke. Sunlight reached out as best it could to the tent. Blake was feeling the rising and the shining. He rubbed his eyes and sat up. However, as he looked up, a large shadow could be seen moving around the tent. Occasionally, it would brush against the material, but that was about the extent of the shadow's actions.
"Kendra," Blake called softly. "I think we have a guest. Probably a caterpie or something. Want to help clear it out?"
Kendra rolled over in her sleeping bag. No, she did not want to help. She wanted to sleep some more. But, with a groan, she sat up and pushed some of her chestnut hair out of her face. "'Kay," she muttered to Blake and then poked at Olive. "Hey. Get up." She pulled back her hair with a scrunchy while the Oddish roused itself. "All right, Blake," Kendra said, stifling a yawn. "Time to do some pest control."
Blake opened his Psyduck's Pokeball. "Duck," came the immeadiate response.
"Don't you 'duck' me. Wake up," Blake said mock-sternly.
As if to spite him, Sai said again, "Duck." Nonetheless, it sat up, holding its head.
Blake walked to the opening on the tent and parted his way through. He could swear he heard a distinct chirp or cry or some such noise, but he saw nothing. He inspected the tent from the outside. Nothing. The shadow was gone, as though it lifted up and flew away.
Blake shrugged. "I guess it's gone," he called back. "But we should probably get going anyway."
"Might as well," Kendra sighed. "You stay out there while I get dressed." She did so quickly, not wanting to leave Blake outside in his pajamas for long.
"All right, it's all yours," Kendra said a few minutes later, pulling her hair into a high ponytail as she left the tent, Olive following her.
Kendra had brought her pack out of the tent, and she pulled out a breakfast bar and a bottle of water. Sitting down on the grass, she looked around. Even though it was morning, the forest was still rather dark, though a few rays of sunlight broke through the trees. Olive waddled over to a patch of sunlight and began absorbing the rays. However, the sun disappeared for a brief moment as something passed by overhead. Her mouth full of granola, Kendra glanced up, but whatever it was had already gone.
The tent was easily enough packed away, though Blake's sleeping bag was a bit hard to fit back into its pouch. The sunlight, Blake noticed, had a strange habit of disappearing in the patches it had chosen to lay, as though the wind was moving branches, but there was no wind. And there would be a brief gust when no noticeable breeze floated by.
Blake decided it time to give the professor's device a check. He plugged in his headphones and turned on the mic. To his shock and surprise, it seemed to be working.
"Freeeeee..." a harsh, somewhat agitated tone called out. Free what?
"Huh?" Kendra asked. "What was that?" She put the breakfast bar wrapped in a pocket of her bag and stood up. "This place is starting to creep me out," she remarked. "You ever see that movie, the one about the kids who go into the forest late at night and they're stalked by this crazy mutant Beedrill?" She nodded. "Yeah, that's the vibe I'm getting. Let's get going. Hopefully we'll get out of this place and to somewhere where I can get a decent cup of coffee."
Coffee sounded nice. It'd be nice to escape all of the stress and relax with some sugar and caffiene. A chance to alleviate some stress and just sit, feeling relaxed, secure and...
"Freeeeee..." spat a sinister voice behind Blake.
Blake checked his Pokedex. Blake's Pokedex did not make the noise. Blake turned around.
"Free," said the Butterfree. It looked upset. And very large, in comparison to the small Caterpie that had been knocked around earlier. Larger still than the Metapod from before, which Blake and Kendra had knocked around for practice.
"Wow, a Butterfree!" Kendra exclaimed, all thoughts of coffee and mutant Bug-types forgotten. "This will mean mega battle experience. Okay, Olive. Use Absorb."
The little Oddish did as she was bid, but the attack didn't even faze the Butterfree. It trilled angrily and flapped its wings fiercely. Rings of Psychic energy emanated from the bug, and Kendra staggered back when a glancing blast of psychic energy hit her.
"K-keep using Absorb," Kendra gasped, putting a hand to her head until the pain passed. Wild Pokemon were dangerous. Olive, having borne the brunt of the attack, was only too glad to recover a little strength with her attack.

It couldn't be upset for that.
...Could it?
