Chapter 1 begins in 2009, with MacGyver "quasi-retired" (stealing RDA's own self-description). Dana Elcar died of pneumonia in 2006, but I have Pete die more recently, of a heart attack (an homage to Don Davis as well). And I have him die in harness -- the reins pass to Nikki, but Pete is far too valuable to sideline. And, of course, the loss is devastating for Mac.
I assume that, although you haven't seen the later seasons, you're aware that Pete developed glaucoma (because Dana Elcar did), but continues to work in spite of the handicap (ditto).
Pete's military background is a nice useful element, too. Connections and all that.
I've read a lot of Mac/Gate crossovers, most of them unsuccessful; the usual crossover is written by someone who knows Stargate well and doesn't know MacGyver, with dismal results. The usual focus is whether Mac and Jack are the same person (TOTAL FAIL), twin brothers (canon FAIL), or cousins (which works, sometimes very well).
Mac/Gate crossovers that don't focus on the Mac/Jack thing at all are rare, but I think they're better. Pepper has a delicious series of pornlets pairing Mac and Sam Carter, and I adore them. I've also seen some surprisingly good commentfic slashing Mac with Daniel Jackson! I had never thought of Mac/Vala until now. *licks lips*
I was vaguely aware of the glaucoma. I need to get more DVD's! I think they've all been released on Region 2 now so I'm aiming to have them all by the end of the year, finances permitting.
The same person?? How would that even work? Yes, total fail! I think I read one once where Jack "knew" RDA and invited him round for Sam to meet as a birthday present, since she'd always had a crush on him and MacGyver was her favourite show. *mind boggles* What???
I think avoiding the Mac/Jack thing entirely would be the best way to go, which means a season 9/10 setting would actually be better. Jack's pretty much out of the picture as far as SG1 goes. Plus, keeping him out of the way would avoid the pesky issue of their voices getting confused in my head, which they are apt to do if I don't just focus on one or t'other.
Pepper's Mac/Sam stuff is amazing! I actually re-read them all yesterday! :D I'm in a Mac mood lately, it seems. *g*
ETA: PLUS Go'uld clones running around on Earth? Of course Mac's involved in that! :D
