I've just had an email from NASUWT (teaching union. I'm still on their mailing list as a student member) asking me to sign a petition. The petition is to stop members of the BNP working in schools. Now, unless I've missed something huge here, isn't that just a bit wrong?
Any good teacher should be able to teach their subject without letting their personal views affect their work or influence their pupils. Sure, they're allowed to have personal opinions, but they should be able to give the students a well rounded view of any issue, not just their own. So why does it suddenly matter whether the teacher is going to vote Labour, Conservative, BNP or Raving Looneys? Active members of any other political party aren't being shoved out. And how is this any different to discriminating against someone because of their race, religion, or sexual orientation?
I don't get it and I really don't get how they're able to get away with this. Am I missing something?
