ARABASHIRI [English Subs - Soft Subs]

Jan 26, 2025 19:28

Synopsis:

Gin Ito (played by Itsuki Fujiwara) inherits an old sake store from his Grandfather, but there's a catch - he has the ability to see the personalities of each type of sake in human form! As well as this unique ability, the sake store can only be found by those in need of it. This is the story of how Gin Ito heals the souls of those who visit, with the strange help of his sake.

Please Note: I've not found anyone else picking this up for subbing yet, so here is my humble attempt. I do *not* speak Japanese so these subtitles are a rough approximation of what is being said rather than a direct translation. I apologise in advance for any mistakes! This is very much a 'passion project' for me as I've really been looking forward to watching this drama and just wanted to know what was going on, but I figured I'd share in case anyone else wants to use them. This is just the beta version for now so there may also be errors in timing/spelling:

TRANSLATION NOTES - I have tried to translate the terminology relating to sake as accurately as possible:

- Arabashiri refers to the drink which is produced during the first pressing of a batch of sake. It roughly translates as 'first run' and is known for its strong, bold flavour which is evocative of rice paddy fields.

- Ibuki means 'first step', and its name is connected to the fact the brewer took a 'first step' when creating it, as well as the way its flavour advances and changes with each sip.

- Akabu sake has a bold, juicy flavour, but with a lingering bitter taste which is said to leave you wanting to come back for more...

- Kamonishiki has an elegant floral aroma which is evocative of Spring.

- Shinomine is a dry sake similar to Martini and associated with more mature, refined drinkers.

- Murayu sake is surprisingly sweet compared to other types of sake brewed in the same area, which tend to be far more dry.

- Okunokami is strong and vibrant, with an intensely fruity flavour.
