I should be doing a math test right now, but once I start I can't be interrupted, and it's almost feeding time. Had an appt with TANF and Medicaid. We have family Medicaid now, so I can't finally see a doctor. It looks like we'll be approved for TANF which will really help during school. That way I can actually take a shit job, and not have to worry so much about bills.
I picked up my books for CNM today. It was a mad house, but I ordered everything online, so we stood inline thinking we had to, but Jyl asked someone who worked there passing by if we were in the right line. She knew my order, took us back, and got everything done, so we were out the door much much faster.
Things to do tomorrow...buy more diapers...much much more diapers, and formula...damn suckers eat too much. We're hoping our EBT benefits go up a lot more because formula can go on EBT. Having twins is costly, and speaking of costly I have this bit of news which I'll cross post on other group posts because it really concerns parents, and action must be taken.
Thank You for Your Support
Most have you have heard by now that a federal law was passed a few months ago regarding lead paint in toys. What most people were unaware of was that they made the law very broad to include not only toys but children's clothing (up to size 12) and baby furniture as well. The public was really unaware they were going to make it illegal after February 10th of this year to sell any of these items second-hand in any way, shape, or form (this would also include Craigs List, E-bay, or yard sales). As you know we are as concerned as we can be about possible hazards to children, but this law went too far.
You may have seen us on the news last week about this very subject. We also appreciate all of the support from all of you in terms of calling your representatives and signing of the email petitions and petitions in the store. The public outcry was so loud throughout the country that the Consumer Products Safety Commission put out a press release stating the law was not intended for the second-hand stores, but for new manufacturers, and they would not currently be enforcing this law as it is written. Unfortunately that does not change the law and should they choose to prosecute under the terms set forth, they can.
Before we heard this we discontinued buying items in question, because we were told they would all become landfill because they could not be certified lead and phthalate free. We hope to be able to buy children's items again as early as next week, but we are waiting for something in writing from Congress as well as the Consumer Protection Agency. We would also appreciate your help in the form of keeping the pressure up on your state representatives so the we can actually have the law changed not just lack of enforcement.
We are still buying women's trendy clothing, maternity and baby furniture. In the meantime we have quickly put out our spring and summer selection, so you will have plenty to stock up on.
Thank you so much for your support on this matter. Please come in and sign our petition and ask any questions you might have (we also have provided an on-line link to forward to all your friends and family who can help support this cause). Please see the links and sample letter we have provided below.

http://www.rallycongress.com/make-second-hand-kids-clothes-legal-/We are asking everyone to continue to put pressure on Congress until they make a legal ruling. The CPSC press release is a great start and lets us know that we were not the target of the law, but unless they take steps to make changes to the actual law, we are still at risk as an industry.
The following link will take you to a contact map for congress:
http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/ To summerize if you don't feel like reading the whole thing. Congress enacted a law against new kid product manufacturers setting new guidelines about lead in clothes, toys, and furniture. They basically created an FDA, but of a third independent company, to give the green light on those types of products for sale. They then decided to expand the law to buy, sell, trade, thrift stores, and garage sells, and yes even Craigslist. If you want to sell kids clothes or toys you have to send them to a third party to make sure there is no lead in them. Other Mothers is no longer buying clothes or toys because they don't have a place where they can send this stuff, and this law will put them out of business along with every other second hand kids store. What this means if if you're strapped for cash, and your kid(s) needs clothes you have no choice, but to pay full price from a department store. Congress said they didn't mean the law to affect stores Other Mothers, and that they should just run business as usual, but they didn't bother to change the law, so they could federally prosecute any of those types of stores if they want to. I seriously think Target, Babies R Us, Walmart, and other large stores had lobbyists in Washington DC to push for the expansion of the original guidelines. For right now these businesses are afraid to do business, and may be forced to close down. Don't let this happen. Get on the phone, Email, or simply mail Congress, whether they are your representative or not to let them know how outrageous this new law is, especially in the economic time we are in they make laws to force thousands of people across the country out of work, and make it harder for millions of parents to keep their kids clothed. Do something!
