A/N:
I own nothing ... except for Emilia and Aedan.

Chapter 1 - Magic Signs

Hermoine walked briskly down the dimly lit hallway of Madame Cottiers Grammar School for Young Girls as she made her way to the Headmistress’ office. The halls reminded her of her own school years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the life that she had given up seven years ago. Hermoine tore away from her memories to realize she was standing in front of the Headmistress’ door, just as she was about to knock the door opened and the Headmistress beckoned her to come in and take a seat next to her seven year old daughter, Emilia.

“Hello Mrs. Brillin, please take a seat.” Hermoine nodded and stole a glance at her daughter. Emilia looked frustrated and worried.
“What is this about Ms. Barton? Has Emilia done something wrong?” Hermoine asked the Headmistress concerned.
“There was an incident that involved Miss Brillin today. Emilia threw paint at two of her classmates during their Art Appreciation lesson with Ms. Thoreau. The two students said that they were painting the still image when Emilia approached them and threw the paint at them for no reason.” The Headmistress replied in a huff tone.
“I didn’t throw paint at them! Mum, I swear it wasn’t me! Chloe and Erica were calling me and Ashleigh twits and making fun of our hair and clothes. But I didn’t throw paint at them and neither did Ashleigh.” Emilia was staring into Hermoine’s eyes with pure sincerity.
“Emilia we will talk about this later, for now go sit outside while I talk to Ms. Barton alone.” Emilia nodded and walked out the door, closing it behind her.
“Mrs. Brillin would you like some tea or coffee?” asked Ms. Barton.
“Why yes, I would love some tea. Thank you.” I smiled as she stood up and turned her back to prepare the beverages. I took out my wand that I now only used for emergencies like these.
“Obliviate!” I muttered the spell silently as I pointed the wand at Ms. Barton. This wasn’t the only time Hermoine had altered Ms. Barton’s memories. Emilia’s magical outbreaks had been happening frequently; showing signs that Emilia being a witch was inevitable. Hermoine was baffled, Aeden had no magical power whatsoever and Hermoine mostly never touched her wand and never did magic in front of her daughter. Ms. Barton turned around with the tea and handed one to Hermoine and sat down again with a confused look on her face.
“What were we talking about again Mrs. Brillin?” she asked flustered.
“You were asking me if I would consider letting Emilia skip grades. You were saying how she is often bored in class because she is far advanced and it wasn’t fair for her brain’s development to keep her behind instead of letting her excel.” It was true; Emilia was growing up to be like me. Always hungry for knowledge and ready to answer any question thrown at her and get it right. Ms. Barton had already approached Aeden and I earlier in the year and we had accepted, but with the memory charm I had her ‘forget’ it. Hermoine noted in her mind to congratulate herself later.
“Of course, of course, Emilia is wise for her age. She should already be in her last year of grammar school according to her test grades and I.Q tests that we run every year at the end of the school term. I was hoping that at the end of this school term we could move her to her appropriate class level. If it’s okay with you and Mr. Brillin of course.” She smiled sweetly, a little to sweetly; she resembled Dolores Umbridge in some ways.
“It would be an honor for Emilia to be skipped up. It would also be an honor for myself and my husband.” Hermoine smiled genuinely.
“Well then it’s all set. Emilia will be entered into her last year the next following school term.” Hermoine nodded and they shook hands. Ms. Barton got up and Hermoine followed. They went to the door shook hands once more and Hermoine left.

As Hermoine turned the last corner of the halls that lead to the main foyer, there she found Emilia being teased by the two girls she assumed were Chloe and Erica. Hermoine took out her wand and with a quick flick the girls forgot everything and walked away. Emilia looked up and saw Hermoine as she was putting the wand away.

“Mum? You do believe me right?” she asked me as I approached her.
“Of course sweetie. Put your coat on.” I put my arm around her shoulder and we walked outside to the awaiting car. Jeffrey our chauffer opened the door so we could get into the town car.
“Thank you Jeffrey.” I smiled as he nodded. “We’ll be heading out to Le Bistro for lunch.” He nodded and I got into the car and he closed the door. I strapped myself in and took out my electronic organizer and started fiddling with the To-Do List while Emilia was talking to Jeffrey as he drove talking about what latest mischief Crookshanks had gotten into with Aeden’s dog Bear. As I dug into my purse for my lip-gloss the mobile started ringing. I dug for it and checked the caller name, it said: Aeden Work and answered it immediately.
“I Love you, I love you, I love you, I love you.” I greeted seductively. He laughed his laugh that I loved.
“I love you too, sweetheart. Where are you two? I called the house and Annette said that you got a call from Emilia’s school. What happened?” he asked in a curious yet concerned tone,
“Well that daughter of yours got into some trouble at school with some vicious little brats.” I replied a little annoyed as I remembered them. It was as if it were me getting teased by the Slytherin jerks, especially the biggest one of all, the Slytherin Prince himself, Draco Malfoy. It gave her goose bumps just thinking of those eyes and his sneering glare.
“So she’s my daughter now? I didn’t conceive her myself, you played an important part too you know.” He laughed. “What happened?” he asked curious.
“We’ll have to talk about this when we get home. It’s serious. It involves the past. My past.” I replied vaguely.
“Oh, I see what you mean. Okay we’ll talk about it later, like at dinner under the moonlight at our favorite restaurant.” He said in a husky voice.
“Is this an invitation?” I asked giggling. I always loved how Aeden loved to surprise me.
“If the answer is yes.” He replied flirting back.
“I’d love to.” I smiled.
“Great I’ll have to meet you at the restaurant say around seven?” he asked. I could imagine him in his office twirling a pen in his fingers and then biting the cap.
“On the dot.” I confirmed twirling a newly dyed light brown curl.
“Great. I love you.”
“I love you too.”
“ ’Moine?”
“Yes Aeden?”
“I love it when you twirl your hair.”
“And I love it how you bite your pen caps.” We laughed and then with another I love you we hung up.

We arrived at Le Bistro and Emilia and I took our usual table outside under an umbrella. It was a very nice sunny day in London and the temperature was just right, not to hot and not to cool. Our usual waiter came and served us the only thing Emilia and I ever order. A huge banana split with two spoons and two lemonades. I ordered a turkey, ham, and roast beef sandwich on French bread to go for Jeffrey.

“Mum, what was that stick you put in your purse?” Emilia asked out of the blue.
“What are you talking about Em?” I asked using my nickname for her. I wasn’t really expecting her to ask; I thought she hadn’t seen it.
“Never mind mum.” She replied as she scooped up some vanilla ice cream into her mouth. I scooped up some chocolate.
“Em, what would you do if I were to tell you that next school term would be your last at Madame Cottiers?” I looked at her waiting.
“I’d be happy. But Mum I still have three years.” She replied looking at me curiously. “Why?”
“Well, Ms. Barton informed me that according to your test scores and I.Q. Tests you are really smart for your age. Naturally all from my side of the family.” I smirked as she giggled. “And she said that next school term you will be skipped to your last year. Isn’t that great?” I asked excited. Emilia took it in slowly and at first she seemed sad but as she started to weigh out her options, she was excited too. All throughout the conversation she felt as though someone was staring at her. Hermoine glanced around but found no one paying attention to her or her daughter.
“So I’m smart?” Emilia asked with a familiar smirk on her face. Hermoine was aghast for a few seconds. She knew that smirk all to well, how could she forget it? Hermoine tried to match Aeden’s smirk and her own with Emilia but no matter how hard she tried it only matched one person.

Chapter 2 - Signature Smirk

“Yes dear, very smart.” She smiled and her pale blue eyes twinkled. Hermoine examined her daughter as she ate. Emilia and Aedan looked so much alike when Emilia was younger; they both had the same mouth and ears. Her eyes looked as a mixture between Aedan and I and Emilia’s hair was the same shade as mine and curly too. Now that she’s older her hair had lightened naturally and was almost white. Her eyes had begun to clear up and began to pale every birthday. She had my nose and bone structure. Her ears and lips were different from Aedan too. She looked nothing like her father. Aedan was pure muggle, born and raised in London. He was three years older than me but we still grew up together until I left for Hogwarts. He was the only one I told about me being a witch, he was like a brother to me and he didn’t judge me or freak out about it.

Around the end of fifth year Aedan and I had started to date. We would break up and get back together again all throughout my last two years at Hogwarts. He had started working for an advertising company and was moving up quick. During our breaks I dated at Hogwarts and the one that ended all of that was the one I least expected. Draco Malfoy and I had gotten Head Boy and Head Girl in our seventh year. He had begun acting weird around me at the end of sixth year; the insults were infrequent and very un-Malfoy-ish. The ever-growing shadow of the Second War was looming over our heads and everyone was feeling uneasy. Since we had to share a common room we saw each other frequently and Draco suggested we call a truce and act civil towards each other, I agreed and we shook on it. Soon after that, all I could think about was Draco Malfoy, Slytherin’s sex symbol, as they all would say. Every so often we’d sneak a small smile at one another, it became like a normal thing. Draco Malfoy, a Slytherin, and I, a Gryffindor, became friends. Our feelings for each other began to escalate to something more until neither of us could deny it. We started a secret relationship. The feeling that our relationship was forbidden made it more thrilling. We’d sneak off to broom closets, empty classrooms, the Room of Requirement; anywhere we could be alone. Draco had given me a ring when he had asked me to be his girlfriend, a ring I still wear to this day. Draco and I had been intimate before and the morning of graduation, feelings of us never seeing each other again overcame us. We had a romp before going to the ceremony, a ceremony that not only brought a close to my years at Hogwarts, but also brought closure to all of those that had died at the hands of Voldemort’s second rise to power and his Deatheaters. When Harry received his diploma, everyone had tears in their eyes and he stopped to look out at the empty seats of the students that gave their lives to save others, to save Harry’s life, and to save my life. The memory of the final battle was so painful, seeing the blank stares of those who were lost haunted my dreams every night. Dumbledore had given Harry, Ron, and I a pensieve of our own to store those morbid memories and any of those that we just didn’t want to recall anymore. The day of my graduation, my parents had brought Aedan with them; we had been on one of our breaks for quite some time, and I was extremely happy with what I had with Draco. After I had received my diploma and I met up with them, Aedan had bent down on one knee in front of everyone and asked me to marry him. I looked at Aedan shocked and bewildered and cast a look around the room. Everyone was staring and the hall was quiet. Draco looked angry and awaited my answer too. I looked at my parents and they nodded for me to say yes, as did Harry, Ron, and Ginny. So I nodded and whispered yes. The hall burst out in applause and whistles and I burst into tears. Aedan hugged me and I looked at where Draco was standing, he was gone. Two months after we left Hogwarts Draco showed up at my door the day of the wedding. Ginny, Lavender, and Pavarti left us alone to talk while they went downstairs to get ready.

“Draco?” I hugged him to me so tight. I had felt so bad since the day of graduation.
“Hermoine look at me.” He said in a serious tone as he held me. His scent was intoxicating and the warmth I felt from him was comforting. The only thing that I didn’t feel when he held me was safe. All the years of torment and suffering hadn’t been healed and I never once felt safe in his arms. I looked up into his pale blue eyes, for the first time I had actually noticed that they weren’t a cold gray. He searched my eyes and pressed his mouth onto mine. He pushed his tongue through my lips and I granted him access. I started tugging at his clothes and him on my robe. He undid the belt and I unbuttoned his shirt and pants. He shrugged them off and I shrugged off my robe. I was already bare under it and he pulled me closer to him. I wrapped my legs around him and he lifted me up never parting our lips. He laid me on the bed and took off his boxers. He started kissing from my navel up to my breasts and then up the side of my neck stopping to suck on my pulse point then traveling up to my mouth. He slowly got between my legs and we started moving to a steady rhythm as one. He started to pick up the pace and I was holding onto the headboard as he pumped harder and harder until finally we reached our release.

“Hermoine, I love you.” He said in between breaths.
“I love you too Draco.” I replied as he kissed me gently.
“Marry me then, instead of that muggle.” He said tracing a heart on my left breast.
“Draco, I would love to marry you, but there’s one important factor here. Aedan may be a muggle but when I’m with him I feel safe. When I’m with you I have to constantly watch my back. Say we got married and had children. We’d be living in fear for their lives.” I spoke softly as I looked into his eyes, which were cloudy.
“Lord Voldemort is gone! The Deatheaters were destroyed! You and I have nothing to worry about. Remember Scarhead, Weasel, and you helped destroy them.” He pleaded.
“Lord Voldemort may be gone, but his followers were not all destroyed. Your father is still out there. He escaped remember? What makes you think that he won’t try to revive Voldemort and re-establish the Deatheaters with our old schoolmates and anyone else he can control? What makes you think he won’t come back after us? If he were to find out about us he’d kill us both and any child we’d bring into the world. He nearly killed you after you saved me from a Deatheater! We are not safe. I do love you, but I can’t risk your life, if you have to live in worry of your father’s return, then I’d rather not be the cause of your pain. I care for you too much. Please understand.” I cried as he got up and looked at me with those cold gray eyes. He shook his head and put his clothes back on.
“I love you Hermoine, that should be enough.” He said as he ran a hand through his hair and walked out.

I got up and grabbed the robe and put it on. I fixed my hair with a flick of my wand and tried hard not to cry. The girls ran up and I composed myself. I told them what happened but excluded the intimate scene. Ginny saw my face and changed the subject to my makeup and then they helped me get dressed. That was the last I ever saw of Draco Malfoy. Aedan and I got married and throughout the ceremony I could sense him near. Aedan and I consumed the marriage and nine-months later Emilia was born. Aedan and I had talked about our futures and in what environment we wanted to raise Emilia in. I wanted so desperately to live in my world of magic but with Aedan not being a wizard they would shun us. I had grown up around non-magic folk until age eleven when I got the letter for Hogwarts. Aedan had suggested we live the ‘normal’ way and raise Emilia as if I wasn’t a witch. I agreed and we moved to the North of London away from Harry, Ron, and losing contact with all my wizard friends.

Now seven years later I am reminded of my past and that one afternoon with Draco right before my wedding ceremony. We had never used any contraceptive spells like many times before and it was all so out of the blue. I had totally forgotten about it, later that night on my wedding night, Aedan and I hadn’t used anything either, he wanted to start a family right away. So it wasn’t a shock to hear three months later that I was in fact with child. I assumed that Aedan was the father.

“Mum? Are you listening to me?” I drew my attention back to my daughter who was shaking her hand in front of my face.
“Sorry Em, I was thinking about something that your father and I have to talk about later.” I smiled and she took a sip of her lemonade.
“Are you ready?” I asked standing up and grabbing the take out box for Jeffrey. Emilia nodded and she skipped to the car as I tagged along behind her. Jeffrey opened the door for Emilia and she rushed in.
“Here Jeffrey, I know you haven’t had a chance to eat.” Smiling I handed the sandwich to him and he smiled gratefully.
“Thank you Mrs. Brillin.” He replied as I got in the car and he closed the door. The car started and we headed back to the penthouse suite at the top of the Meyers building. It was only four o’clock that meant that I had two and a half hours to get ready for dinner with Aedan. As we arrived to the building I noticed a large tawny owl flying by the first floor windows. This of course would be deemed unordinary since I no longer had any contact with anyone from my world, but something told me that if that owl were indeed for me, it would be from none other than Albus Dumbledore himself. Jeffrey opened the car door and I stepped out into the darkening sky. The owl swooped around and started flying towards Emilia and myself. Emilia looked up and smiled as she saw the animal flying towards her. I reached out for the letter that it held in its claw but instead it dropped it into Emilia’s hands. I looked up and it was gone.

“Look Mum, it has my name on it. Emilia Brillin, Meyer’s building entrance, London, England.” She showed me the letter smiling.
“I think you should hand it to me and we’ll open it upstairs okay?” Emilia’s smile faded as she handed me the letter and I pushed her inside the building holding my breath until we reached the safe confines of the penthouse.
