Blueowl: To Shape and Change
Fandom: Harry Potter AU. Time Travel. Snape goes back in time, holding the knowledge of what is to come if he fails. No longer holding a grudge, he seeks to shape Harry into the greatest wizard of all time, starting on the day Hagrid took Harry to Diagon Alley. No Horcruxes.

This is one that I've recently re-read & I'm amazed that I didn't add it to this list long ago; it's outstanding. Snape's character is AU but, given the horrific future he's come from and his friendship there with Harry developed over years of fighting together, this is not surprising. His careful manipulations and guidance are well plotted and very logical. Harry's abilities are considerably more than in canon but don't approach the common pitfall of becoming super!Harry. Voldemort is convincingly and chillingly portrayed without being caricatured as he often is. Highly recommended, even for those (like me) for whom Snape is not a favourite character.
Length: long (34 chapters)
Rating: PG (horror)
Pairing: none
