Summary: His head was filled with sights, sounds, and sensations until it felt about to burst - and suddenly he remembered everything.
AN: This is basically my explanation for why Chuck's behavior in previous episodes doesn't match up with him being God, just to set my own mind at ease.
Chuck had just written the final sentence on Swan Song and clicked the save button when it happened. Something like lightning slammed through his head, almost like the visions he had of Sam and Dean, only different somehow, more intense, more profound. Then his head was filled with sights, sounds, and sensations until it felt about to burst - and suddenly he remembered everything.
He remembered being God.
He remembered watching his children fighting, tearing each other apart, Michael sobbing as he threw his little brother into the Pit.
He remembered knowing that Lucifer would rise again and that his children, both angel and human, must learn to defend themselves, make their own decisions.
He remembered telling Joshua that he would not interfere, then making arrangements to keep his chosen soldiers fighting.
Finally, he remembered hiding away his own memories, knowing that if he was aware of his own power, he would not be able to keep from interfering to save his children such pain.
God smiled to himself. Things hadn’t gone perfectly in his absence, and he hadn’t really expected them too, but overall he was proud of what had been accomplished. Lucifer was back in Hell spending some quality time with Michael, Castiel had embraced free will, and the Winchesters had learned that sometimes destiny was a choice.
Yes, he reflected, perhaps the Plan had worked even better than he had expected. And it wasn’t over yet.
With a snap of his fingers, God headed home. There were a few unruly children there he needed to have a stern word or two with.
