“He saved the world,” Johnson says softly.
As she sits cradling her son’s body, tears running down her face, Alice feels rage boil through her. “It wasn’t his place.” She looks up, puts as much venom as she can into the glare she stabs at her father. “He didn’t have a choice.”
The man looks away, clearly distressed, and she’s not sorry. He has no idea how she feels. He doesn’t care. The world is safe and that’s all that matters, because he doesn’t know how it feels.
Eveyone else has been saved, yes, but Alice Carter’s world has ended.
