The Doctor was sitting in the TARDIS library one night relaxing with a book when a voice from the door interrupted him.

“Doctor…can I come in?”

He looked up to see Rose hesitating in the doorway, dressed in a set of pink pajamas, blonde hair rumbled as if she had been tossing and turning for some time. “Of course. Is anything wrong?”

She shook her head as she came hesitantly forward. “No, nothing. I just…can’t sleep.”

“Oh? Well, maybe I can help. Come here and sit down.” He moved over on the huge chair he sat in and patted the space left over beside him. “Let me read you a bedtime story.”

“A bedtime story?” Rose asked curiously as she moved forward. “Isn’t that a bit domestic?”

“Is it?” The Doctor cocked his head to one side for a moment, considering, then a grin spread across his face. “Nah, I don’ think so. Come on, then.” He patted the place beside him again, and his companion obliged him by sitting down. “What would you like to hear?”

“What have you got?” Rose asked as she made herself comfortable, snuggling into the Time Lord’s side.

He smiled at her before reached for a pile of thin books on a small table beside the chair. “Let’s see. How about one of these?”

He handed her the pile, and she looked though it. None of the picture books were familiar, though upon farther thought she shouldn’t have expected them to be. Not really caring what he said, only wanting to hear his voice, she picked one at random and gave it back to him. “This one looks good.”

“Ah! Goodnight for Clom. This was one of my favorites when I was a boy. Good choice, Rose.” He settled himself into position, wrapping one arm around her to get a better grip on the book, cleared his throat, and began the story. “The skies are getting dark, the sun has gone away,” he read. “It’s time for sleepy Clom to say goodbye to one more day.”

Rose leaned her head against his shoulder, feeling his warm body against hers, and thought she had never been more comfortable. She let his words wash over her, paying more to attention to their lovely sound than what he was acutally saying. Soon, she let her eyes drift closed.

A few minutes later, the Doctor pronounced, “The End,” and looked down at his companion. He was only slightly surprised to find her asleep and couldn’t keep a tender smile from his lips at the sight of her face. She looked so peaceful, like an angel, with soft blonde hair falling over her face and her lips parted ever so slightly, almost inviting.

He knew he shouldn’t, but he couldn’t help himself. Slowly, careful not to disturb her, he leaned down and touched his lips to hers. She stirred in her sleep, smiled slightly, but didn’t wake. The Doctor straightened up again and wrapped his other arm around her. He thought he would never be as content as to sit there and hold her all night.
