It was a stench that he never hoped to smell again. The sterile, astringent smell of the hospital always brought back bad memories for Yukimura Seiichi.

The memories of lying helpless, unmoving yet wanting to move were almost too much to bear.

But this was a happy occasion. Or it was supposed to be before his wife was wheeled to the operating room for an emergency C-section.

The worrying was eating at him, even though he was right there watching. Part of his mind told him to run far, far away, but the sane part knew that his family needed him.

The scalpels, the various cutting implements scared him. Almost ten years ago some of the same instruments had saved his own life, and now they were about to assist in the introduction of a new life that had decided to come into the world a few weeks early.

Blocking out the memories, Seiichi smiled down at his wife. “It’ll be alright.” He said quietly, watching her and not the frantic doctors that were cutting into her.

They had lost track of the time, and it was almost a surprise when the doctors handed the baby over to the happy parents.

“He’ll be fine. In the meantime, Rosa needs to rest.” The doctor said. “He’s lucky.”

Seiichi shook his head, as he held the newborn. “I guess it runs in the family.” He said quietly, smiling a little.

Sitting in the spectator stands, 15 years later, Seiichi and Rosa watched as their son decimated his opponent at the National tournament in Japan.

“Luck isn’t the only thing that runs in the family.” Seiichi said quietly to himself, feeling very proud of his kid as history went repeating.
