Niou/Yagyuu; Swords (suggested by vacivity) giving_ground May 29 2007, 08:31:37 UTC
518 words. Heh. I am way rusty at writing after the whole madness of university thing. Forgive me.

"I could kill you," Niou says. Softly. That's what's most noticeable. He never speaks softly. "I should."

The sword is pressed lightly against Yagyuu's neck, a ghost-presence - any more than that and he'd already be bleeding. Niou.

"When did you ever care about what you should do?" he murmurs. It feels as though if they speak any louder something they can't name will shatter. "You won't."

There's a little twist to Niou's lips, and the trickster looks away. He can look anyone in the eye and lie to them, but he can't look at Yagyuu right now. Maybe because he's right. Maybe because he's wrong. Yagyuu should know which, but he doesn't.

"You lied--"

"Yes. I lied to you." I didn't want to.

"No-one fucking tricks me."

"I didn't trick you about..."

He doesn't want to say it. I didn't trick you about needing you.

There's a long pause; he can feel the blade shifting against his skin. A little trickle of blood runs down his neck. It seems as though the world is holding its breath, but Yagyuu is realistic; the world will barely notice, one way or the other.

He closes his eyes. If Niou is going to kill him, he is not sure he can watch the expression on his face as he swings the blade.

"No," Niou says at length. "You didn't. You fucking bastard."

Yagyuu opens his eyes again to see the sword being wiped clean, slid back into its sheath.

"You fucking bastard," Niou says again, almost under his breath. Yagyuu feels himself slump involuntarily, tension leaving his body. The world is coming back, a little at a time; the whisper of wind through the trees in the garden, the trickle of water, cicadas chirping. All far too calm for the scene that has just taken place.

"Yes," Yagyuu says, and means I'm sorry.

Niou exhales heavily, drops himself awkwardly onto the floor in front of Yagyuu. "Who gave you your orders?"

"Yukimura," Yagyuu says, and feels like a traitor - but less like a traitor than he did when he told Niou he had no other loyalties.

"Who else." No surprise there. Maybe even a bit of softening in Niou's eyes. "Trust him to find someone like you."

They're leaning closer, a mutual need for reassurance tugging at them until they're sharing breath. Being this close to Niou never fails to be intoxicating, stirring a kind of desperate need in Yagyuu that he never could control. That's what led them both here, after all.

"Anything else like this and I'll kill you," Niou says, words breathed into Yagyuu's mouth in the instant before their lips meet. It's the truth.

"You won't need to," Yagyuu says when they part, hand clenching on Niou's arm, unwilling to let go. "I..."

"Yeah," Niou murmurs over him, and Yagyuu feels intense relief. You don't need to say it. "I know."

If Niou wasn't sure, Yagyuu would be dead. Even for Yagyuu, Niou wouldn't take chances. Would he? Or maybe he would. Yagyuu knows Niou, but Niou is on unfamiliar ground himself. He has, Yagyuu thinks, never needed anyone before. Not like this. It's... a familiar feeling.

They'll just have to work it out as they go along.
