Doesn't Even Need a Kiss
Mal and Inara never actually marry, in those years after Miranda; still, there's passion there, and tumultuous brilliant love, out in the open at last.
River wonders, at first, why the brilliance of it burns her, why it brings tears up in her eyes if she looks too long, why she can't bear to be around them both at once.
She knows, finally, the day Inara comes up to the bridge, into the space River thinks of as her own; puts a name to the jealousy that flares up inside her, the sharp twist in her insides that leaves her withdrawn and sulky, quiet long after Inara leaves and the bridge belongs to them again, just her and Mal and Serenity.
“You ever get lonesome, albatross?” he asks, bridging the gap with his voice; his eyes and his knowledge of her, after all this time, are too sharp for secrets.
