Far Beyond Where We Stand
She's not quite finished yet when he comes down into the bunk, and she doesn't need to turn from her work to visualize the quizzical look he's wearing.
“Don't make faces. I bought them in the market,” she says, perched up on the edge of the little table, toes curling out over empty space, careful to avoid the assortment of boxes and books, the collection of object that make this space Mal's.
“If you break that, you're fixin' it,” he says, but without heat. “And if you fall, I ain't catching you.”
This makes her pause, her hands held still over her head while she looks down on him. “A fall from this height is unlikely to do serious damage. Also, I don't fall.”
“Can think of a time or two you did,” he says, not even bothering to cover over the smugness in his voice. She hides her reactions - rolling eyes and smiling lips both - turning her face back to the little balls of potential light, contained clear in her hands. “Not sure I see the need for more lights in here nohow.” Despite his earlier claim, he's right behind her, waiting, a backup plan for balance.
“Fairy lights,” she says, connecting the cords, watching the tiny room transform into a hundred points of white light. “Like bringing the stars inside and living in the sky.”
She turns in time to watch with her eyes as a grin spreads across his face, and waits out the seconds before he raises his hands to hers, ready to catch her.
