When Loren was younger, her best friend dreamed of being a princess. They would read fairy tales together (well, one of their parents would read to them) and her friend would twirl around like she was wearing a princess dress and gush about what her prince would be like. Loren would scoff and ask what was so great about frilly dresses and needing gross boys to save you all the time. She'd rather be like Robin Hood, living free in the forest and taking money from mean people.

On the Andalite homeworld, Elfangor told her, parents would tell their children similar tales, about cruel aliens who took innocent females from their grazing fields and the brave males who stole them back. The first time he heard a human fairy tale she had to explain the difference between a royal prince and a War-Prince.

Loren learned quickly that fairy tales were not reality. When her father came home from war smelling of blood and stale whiskey and she had to watch her mother cry she had asked, But isn't he your prince? And her mother had smiled sadly and shook her head.

Elfangor learned later, but still too early. When he signed up for the Andalite military he still believed, in the strength of goodness and brave males rescuing frightened females and happily ever afters. It didn't take long for everything to be turned downside up, and he found himself alone on an alien planet no longer able to believe in anything he'd known before.

He still had Loren, though. It wasn't a happily ever after but they had both learned long before that past and future were unimportant, and as long as they were together they would survive -- until they weren't, and he didn't.
