Title: Better Than Nothing
Rating: NC-17
Prompt: 19 - Secrets

Sometimes he swears she knows, just by the way she looks at him. Like he's not just Peeta Mellark, hiding behind silence and steel - but someone who sees Katniss for who she really is.

Obviously, that's before the games.

In the arena, there are no secrets. There is no such thing as shame - and that is how they come to be fucking on the floor of their cave because they're angry and bitter and in a lot of ways can't stand each other.

But it's not as if they can kill each other outright.

So they do it by degrees; a suck to the skin over Peeta's jugular one day, fingers against Katniss's cunt the next.

And it's not like these hidden acts can be seen on camera.

They hope.

They have to get rid of their anger somehow; they'd both rather come close to hurting each other than drown in their internal pain.

It just works, somehow, and in the context of the arena it seems almost normal, albeit just as barbaric as the real murder taking place almost on their doorstep.

Sweat and soaked skin and cum are just as deadly as the blood, the gore of limbs spread open, heads dashed against rocks or knives, and tributes walking straight into traps set for them like they're cows to the slaughter.

Murder weapons take many forms.

Lust combined with anger is possibly the most dangerous of them all. Spears, knives, arrows, fists - none of them could harm Katniss or Peeta the way this lethal mixture will. Because in the end, it is easy for both of them to endure physical torture.

The tricks that the Capitol plays on their minds are far more painful; the tracker jacker psychosis, muttations - worst of all, not knowing what is real.

Title: We Only Say Goodbye
Rating: High PG-13
Prompt: 4 - goodbye

Title is from 'What Sarah Said' by Death Cab for Cutie.

"One of us will die soon," she says, matter-of factly.

Peeta knows this is true, but his body and mind rebel against the inevitable, forcing him to swallow past the lump in his throat and breathe through the tiny, fear-constricted sacs of his lungs before he answers just as coolly, "it'll be me, Katniss, not you."

That is a truth he can easily - too easily - accept.

Katniss is frightened by the nonchalance behind Peeta's words as he talks of his own death.

She isn't easy to scare, not anymore. It's easy to see she is no longer a Seam girl, innocent in some ways. Katniss has matured in an effort to survive, training her brain and body in hopes of actually escaping the arena.

Then again, so has everyone else.

Peeta knows they're not going to make it, and this fact that has suddenly become a living entity seems to whisper in his ear, inspiring him to kiss Katniss there in the dark of the cave, out of view of the residents of Panem.

This kiss, at least, isn't motivated by cameras.

They're saying goodbye and I love you and why us without using words, because no one in the Capitol can know how emotionally invested they are in each other.

The odds are bad enough already.

When they drop the berries there's a moment of silence, and they wonder if maybe they've made it to heaven after all; the nightlock must have worked its way into their systems before the trumpet sounded, this can't be real -

Because they're together again, somehow.

Before they're sedated, the arena echoes with one sound nobody hears.

The four-note whistle plays on and on.

Above them, Rue smiles, knowing that the odds are in their favor once more. Good luck, District twelve, she whispers.
