Table here Sam asked Dean the same question pretty much on a daily basis.
“How can you not believe in God, Dean?”
And each time, Dean would give his brother the same response as always.
“There IS no God, Sammy. No God would let the things we’ve seen happen.”
Sam shook his head.
“You’re really telling me that after all we’ve been through, after all we’ve done, you can’t believe that there’s, what, a Higher Power out there?”
Dean sighed.
“Look, Sam, there was a time when I thought like you. I put on the clothes, went to church, read the Bible. I went through the motions.” He dragged a hand over his face.
“I believed in Him. I prayed every night. I used to ask God to take care of us, to watch over us. But it never happened. Where was God when Mom died, huh, Sam? Where was he when I needed him?” His voice was louder now.
“Look, Dean,” Sam began, but his older brother cut him off angrily.
“NO!” Dean yelled, pushing his brother away. “How can you do it, Sammy? How can you believe in the one thing that took away Jess & Mom? God could have stopped it all from happening, but he didn’t. And I don’t know how you can sit here and tell me that you believe that this is all part of some big plan, Sam. I really don’t.”
His voice soft, Sam questioned,
“Don’t you ever wonder why you’re here? Why you were brought back from the dead, Dean?”
“I’m here because Dad made a deal. Nothing more, nothing less.” He furrowed his brows.
“God never had time for me when I needed him. I was denied, I was forsaken. I don’t have time to waste wondering if there’s something out there.”
